Boomerang (1992) and Harlem Nights (1989) look to be coming 6/28/22, or at least close to that date.

Did you all know that Brian Robbins is the President and CEO of Paramount? The Brian Robbins who was Eric on Head of the Class. The Brian Robbins who produced and directed Good Burger, Varsity Blues, and Norbit.

I did actually know that. He put his time in at Nickelodeon for years, he's kind of exactly who you'd want to run a studio: someone who's played multiple high level roles within the industry itself

Yeah, Finch recently posted a link to a Hollywood Reporter article in the Mission: Impossible thread that mentions it.

Oh, it’s probably the same article I posted above (and a better thread to have posted it in). I don’t doubt that Robbins is a capable producer and executive, it’s just surprising to me. His strategy of focusing on mid-budget content to feed the streaming platform is probably exactly right for Paramount (if Tom Cruise doesn’t sink the studio altogether).

You're right, it's the same article. I overlooked that you also linked to it.

I've never seen Back to the Beach but I remember quite a few people liking it, especially for the cameos (Pee-Wee, and I believe a priceless guitar duel between Stevie Ray Vaughan and Dick Dale covering the great rock instrumental "Pipeline")

I generally don't care for Lasse Hallstrom's work, but What's Eating Gilbert Grape is an exception. I haven't seen it in many years, but I remember liking it quite a bit, and it's probably interesting to see now for DiCaprio's performance (his first Oscar nomination).

The other two are horrible.

Only the coneheads at Paramount would think that what people want is Mel Gibson and SNL dollar bin fare, and not Nic Cage as a vulnerable ambulance driver in psychospiritual distress

Coneheads seems like a terrible choice all around - an awful movie that also flopped at the box office ($30 million production budget, $21.3 million gross) - but maybe it did well on the home video market?

I don't know the Venn diagram between who still buys physical media (on formats like blu-ray vs DVD, etc.) and the kinds of films those people seek out, but it reminds me of Adam Sandler's Netflix deal, where his series of worse-and-worse, barrel-floor-scraping comedies were getting the most views time and time again by a huge population of Americans. I don't know if those movies would have killed at the box office either, but sometimes people want to watch something silly and stupid at home alone. I know I prefer those kinds of films in one setting vs another. Also, I do think it's gained somewhat of a cult following- maybe not a huge one (it's not a Cult Film), but I've run across plenty of people over the years who will bring it up favorably when 'comedies' as a genre comes up. It was certainly advertised well at VHS rental stores when I was growing up.

Yes, Coneheads became a popular movie through home video rentals and television broadcasts. I recall it being a staple on - I believe - USA Network for several years. It does seem to have nostalgic value for a lot of people now, so commercially this release makes sense to me.

I can't believe people actually enjoy that movie, even for stupid laughs. I can't remember a single joke that was really funny, even as a kid who watched SNL reruns almost every day. The end credits of Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker's movies alone were funnier.

I think once one thinks of the release strategy in tiers things make more sense.

Tier 1 - UHD releases and Presents line
Tier 2 - Licensing to labels (currently Criterion/Shout/Kino) that are interested in prestige or genre titles that don't fit Paramount's Presents line or UHD sales outlook
Tier 3 - Budget line BD upgrades; essentially their MOD line
Tier 4 - Not worthy of release / legal issue prohibits release

Coneheads and the like are Tier 3. Once in a while it'll be a film one actually cares about (Top Secret!, for example), but usually it's just a scattershot of "just enough people like this one to print a couple thousand copies".

Tier 3, aka the Roman Hruska tier. But yeah, it makes sense.

But should-be-Tier-3 titles are getting Tier 1 releases, and I’m positive Paramount has just licensed several should-be-Tier-1 titles to Kino. Imprint has gotten quite a few already. It seems Paramount Presents is going the schizophrenic WAC route with their selections.

The '80s have a lot to answer for. (Dick Dale's hair, ugh.) But musically, that was a lot of fun. I actually recognized a lot of the other cameos, and it got me thinking about an equivalent nostalgia trip for today, which I suppose we've already gotten: Full House and those Aaron Spelling shows of the '90s were about 25-30 years ago, just as Leave It to Beaver and Gilligan were in 1987.

I really like buying all these 4K Blu-rays and finding creative ways to fit them into Criterion Collection/MoC/Arrow Blu-ray cases.
