Re: Paul Thomas Anderson
Somewhat lazily, too.
He didn't tell Film Inquiry that, it was quoted from a live Q&A where he was trying to remember details off the cuff, which should have been checked before being printed as actual fact. I Know Where I'm Going being shot that early would mean it predated the formation of the Archers.I Know Where I’m Going!” (1945)
“The Red Shoes” is considered Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s magnum opus, but Paul Thomas Anderson says the duo’s 1945 drama “I Know Where I’m Going!” is his pick for the best Powell-Pressburger film. “It’s a movie that was shot during the war up in the Hebrides,” Anderson told Film Inquiry. “It’s fantastic. It’s got a great female lead, and she’s kind of off, she’s off up north out of London and it’s just a great film. It’s a Powell–Pressburger movie. Where it falls in their scheme of things, I’m not really quite sure, but they shot a lot of it as the war was going on like in 1941 and 1942. And it’s not to be missed.”

Re: Paul Thomas Anderson
This sucks and is such a weird desperate thing, cobbling together (as swo alluded to) any film Anderson has had a kind word to say about in passing. Many of which are from 2017, because he did such an extended press tour for Phantom Thread and was likely asked many times about recent films he enjoyed. The notion that IndieWire framed this as a list of his 35 favorite films is gallingFrauBlucher wrote: ↑Thu Mar 05, 2020 10:15 pmVia Indiewire...

Indiewire is particularly bad on the "False Titles for Articles" front. They've been posting outright salacious or downright untrue article names for about three years now. My personal favorite was one whose title was something to the effect of "People of Color not Consulted on an Issue" only to have the article in question have nothing to do with that issue at all.

Re: Paul Thomas Anderson
This I agree with. I’ve seen the movie only once, but the scene of Stanwyck sitting on porch in evening light is the most beautiful shot of the most beautiful woman in cinema history rivalled only by Ladies of Leisure scene of laying on sofa with raindrops casting shadows.“The Bitter Tea of General Yen” and immediately fell in love with it. Anderson raved, “I would start with Barbara Stanwyck. She’s the sexiest woman I’ve ever seen in my life. Stunning actress. But if there is a reason for film lighting to be something that is an art form that we continue to do, that we struggle for: look at that film! Look at those sets!”

Fiona Apple doesn't have the kindest things to say about PTA during their romance
I don't know the guy, and I'm not going to make excuses for her accounts of his behavior, but from everything I've read about him during his 90s period into the 00s and now indicate a pretty heavy maturation from cocky asshole to calmer self-aware guy, albeit with an admitted issue with control. Anyways, it's interesting to hear that the impromptu following to Hawaii in Punch-Drunk Love was based on a real-life experience!

Yeah, he's really a different person now than he was. And the two are friendly, so it's clear she agrees.

I actually met someone who did drugs a few times with PTA in the 90s, and claims he’s mellowed out and fairly reclusive. He said it was mostly marijuana, but would party a little harder at times. PTA can be spotted fairly regularly at New Beverly matinees with his kids, with one friend even seeing him take several Bird scooters right after a screening with a few of his kids.

PTA was open about his cocaine use in interviews regarding its realistic depiction in his films, I believe following Magnolia’s release. I’m glad your acquaintance supports that impression about him. People are allowed to be wild, and behave in ways that don’t reflect their strengths, and change.
After that Punch-Drunk trivia, I’m very curious as to what else in his work is autobiographical.

Re: Paul Thomas Anderson
Is it fair to speculate he really felt he deserved to win that Oscar causing this anger outburst, or at best it's just a coincidence?According to Apple, Anderson’s temper made their relationship difficult at times. Apple decided to stay with her dad after the 1998 Academy Awards because Anderson threw a chair across a room following the ceremony. Apple remembers telling herself, “Fuck this, this is not a good relationship.” Anderson was nominated for Best Original Screenplay for “Boogie Nights” but lost to Matt Damon and Ben Affleck for “Good Will Hunting.”

I don’t think it’s fair to speculate anything. It reportedly happened after the ceremony not after he lost the award, so cumulative emotional turmoil around maybe midnight after losing, probably using alcohol/substances, and any number of conversations/arguments/intrusive thoughts, and so on and so forth

Re: Paul Thomas Anderson
After reading that, I finally looked up Foley's "insane" first wife. It's actually Canadian columnist Tabatha Southey, formerly of the Globe and Mail and now with Maclean's. Anyway, I think I mentioned this elsewhere, but I have a friend who claimed that Foley's alimony payments were based on a period of unusually high income thanks to NewsRadio, and due to legal obligations to continue payments at that level, he was forced to take on a string of tremendously shitty gigs. Turns out, Southey's own paper did a story about this:
As Foley succinctly put it via Twitter in December, "Family court in Ontario ruled I have to pay 1st wife 3X my monthly income or go to jail because I used to be rich.”
Foley fears legal action because Ontario’s Family Responsibility Office has an enforcement order and jail time waiting for him due to his continued missed payments. The Kid in the Hall was spared jail time in November 2010 by making a $20,000 payment (according to Pop Eater, he had to borrow the cash from his brother), but that is just a drop in the bucket. According to the Toronto Star, Foley is supposed to pay $17,301.30 per month: $10,700 agreed to in 2001, plus $1,601.30 to reflect cost of living increases and a $5,000 fee that is meant to help pay down the $589,000 total already overdue.
While Southey’s lawyer, Jacqueline Mills, maintains that Foley’s child support debts began while he still had a large income, Foley spoke out against this idea on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast in February. Foley jokes that his current foray into stand-up is “court ordered” and goes on to explain an Ontario judge’s recent ruling that Foley’s inability to pay is not relevant to his obligation to pay. He also pokes fun at the judge’s decree that Foley’s death would not be considered a material change to his circumstances, thus warranting changes in the child support agreement.
“I called Kevin [McDonald]. I said, ‘If I die, you have to take my corpse out on the road,’” Foley joked. “You’ve got to be out there doing another restaging of the of The Odd Couple, but this time Oscar’s dead.” Foley also said he’d be happy to give away half of his earnings, but is unable to meet the price demanded of him by the Ontario government. He told the Toronto Star, “My income has dropped in the last 10 years, as anyone can tell from the number of shitty movies I’ve been in. I’m not exactly picking and choosing my projects.”

I've been married, divorced, and re-married in Ontario. I'm a big fan of Foley, but quite honestly from my experience, there's must be more to the story for the judge to have ruled that way. That's not the normal expectation from Family Court here.

My wife was the art director on one of the smaller Toronto films Foley decided to do in 2004 (not necessarily for the paycheque, because the budget was almost non-existent, but as a favour to the director), and I distinctly remember her telling me how depressed he seemed on set. He was always funny and courteous, but a bit broken, too.willoneill wrote: ↑Wed Jan 06, 2021 10:59 amI've been married, divorced, and re-married in Ontario. I've never met him, but have traveled in similar circles, and everyone I know who worked with him, or knew him personally, speaks glowingly of him as a human being, as they do most of the Kids. Especially Kevin and Mark.
And now a little gloating. I attended about five tapings of the Kids in the Hall back in the early 90's and, honestly, it was the best free Toronto evening you could ever imagine; incredible live performances by the Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet introducing the show and in between every sketch set-up, and two full episodes recorded live - a CBC version, and then a completely different, slightly raunchier HBO one. Wonderful.
