Shout-out to this board's members for coming up with four different ways of writing the word "Cancan"

The top three were separated by only three points, so think long and hard next time you're ranking, because this was the definition of a close one

Thanks for all the considerable (and seemingly thankless) effort. The Godard results are really surprising. La chinoise so high for example. Anyway here are my lists.

Renoir
1 This Land is Mine
2 La Bete Humain
3 Grand Illusion
4 Swamp Water
5 A Day in the Country
6 The Elusive Corporal
7 The Little Theatre of Jean Renoir
8 Madame Bovary
9 The Lower Depths
10 Picnic on the Grass
11 La Marseillaise
12 Toni
13 The Doctor's Horrible Experiment
14 The Diary of a Chambermaid
15 The Little Match Girl

Godard
1 Notre musique
2 Week End
3 Le gai savoir
4 Contempt
5 Alphaville
6 Historie(s) du cinema
7 Vivre sa vie
8 Passion
9 Le petit soldat
10 Goodbye to Language
11 Keep Your Right Up
12 Number 2
13 Band of Outsiders
14 Tout va bien
15 British Sounds
16 First Name: Carmen
17 2 X 50 Years of French Cinema
18 France/Tour/Detour/Deux/Enfants
19 Les carabiniers
20 A Married Woman

Ford
1 The Grapes of Wrath
2 Wagon Master
3 The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
4 Young Mr Lincoln
5 7 Women
6 Stagecoach
7 My Darling Clementine
8 The Searchers
9 Donovan's Reef
10 The Prisoner of Shark Island
11 How Green Was My Valley
12 The Rising of the Moon
13 Fort Apache
14 When Willie Boy Comes Marching Home------------This is such a bizarre film whose qualities can be misunderstood so I totally get others for not voting for it. As a meta coming to terms with new cinema from Ford though I find it sa delight.
15 Flesh
16 Pilgrimage
17 The Iron Horse
18 Hurricane
19 The Horse Soldiers
20 The Lost Patrol

My Ford list:

1. My Darling Clementine
2. The Grapes of Wrath
3. How Green Was My Valley
4. The Searchers
5. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
6. Stagecoach
7. The Quiet Man
8. They Were Expendable
9. The Prisoner of Shark Island
10. Wagon Master

I attempted a Renoir list but couldn't come up with 10 I loved (without doing a bunch of rewatching that I didn't have time for). Still, I'm sad that Boudu didn't rate higher (it would have been my #1, which would have been enough to get it into the top 10). I didn't even bother with Godard.

Thanks for compiling these, I’ll have to post my lists when I get to my computer. I’m surprised no one voted for mr Roberts for Ford and a little surprised grapes of wrath came out on top.

Is the journey for herbs Renoir film picnic in the grass?

I could be wrong about this, but I don't believe it's really John Ford film anyway. I think I read that in Scott Eyman's book about Fonda & Stewart.

He's still credited, so it was eligible. I assume we all stood in solidarity with Arthur Kennedy losing his Oscar for Trial to Jack Lemmon just being Jack Lemmon and committed to a lifetime of snubbing the movie

I recently re-watched La Grande illusion, and I still don't have any clue why this one has stand the test of time (apart from the deep focus photography, but even that one looks better in more modern films), contrary to La Grande illusion Renoirs other great classic film La Règle du jeu gets indeed better with every viewing. My favourite of him is Le crime de Monsieur Lange, but generally Renoir films have mostly a few stunning scenes, but are often a little bit boring. Godard is much more fun to watch.

I find it hard to rank Godard, since his cinema only gets better the more works you see by him and for how often his works are in conversation with each other (Vivre sa vie/Numero Deux/Sauve qui peut are all better in the context of the others). I have yet to see anything uninteresting by him, but Le livre d'image repeating much of Histoire(s) du cinema while saying very little on its ostensible subject (the Middle East) came close. Hoping Numero Deux's profile in his oeuvre raises, as it was a revelation for me this past year and he never made anything quite like it again.

01 Numero Deux
02 Adieu au langage 3D
03 A bout de souffle
04 La Chinoise
05 Eloge de l'amour
06 Je vous salue, Marie
07 Alphaville
08 Une Femme est une femme
09 Week End
10 Histoire(s) du Cinema

11 2 ou 3 choses que je sais d'elle
12 Pierrot Le Fou
13 Masculin Féminin
14 Sauve qui peut (la vie)
15 King Lear
[also ran]
16 Helas pour moi
[orphan]
17 Godard's Passion
18 Detective
19 Bande a part
20 Made in USA

I realize I never did post my list:

Ford:

1. How Green was my Valley
2. The Searchers
3. The Quiet Man
4. My Darling Clementine
5. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence
6. Young Mr. Lincoln
7. Stagecoach
8. They Were Expendable
9. The Grapes of Wrath
10. Pilgrimage
11. The Informer
12. Wagon Master
13. Two Rode Together
14. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
15. 3 Bad Men
16. Rio Grande
17. The Long Voyage Home
18. Wee Willie Winkie
19. The Rising of the Moon
20. Drums Along the Mohawk

Revisits were crucial to ordering this, but three new to me films made the list, Wagon Master, Rio Grande, and The Rising of the Moon, this project pushed my Ford films well over sixty, which I believe makes him my most seen director now. I also feel like I finally "got" My Darling Clementine and Stagecoach, perhaps because I was now far away enough from expectations (no, this one is the greatest western ever, no this one is) that probably colored my first couple viewings, and because I've seen a thousand or two other films since I first watched and rewatched those nearly twenty years ago!

I wasn't able to get to revisiting Fort Apache, Mogambo, Iron Horse, and Sergeant Rutledge due to running out of time, and because Fort Apache succumbed to the WB disc rot syndrome.

Nothing tumbled quite so far as Prisoner of Shark Island, and I was gobsmacked on my post-list revisit that Two Rode Together isn't more well regarded, particularly as it seems like such a natural companion to (and deliberate myth destruction of) the Searchers. Were I doing the list now, Two Rode Together would be at somewhere between 5 and 9, I think.

3 Bad Men remains my favorite silent, and Just Pals did not hold up nearly as well as I thought it was going to (on a preliminary list)

Wee Willie Winkie and Drums Along the Mohawk are probably the two weakest entries here, Having seen Gideon's Day and Last Hurrah since, I think both would probably knock those two off, but I think I'd keep the charming Rising of the Moon. Last Hurrah was certainly a historical oddity, a bit of Irish rage that was rendered impotent by the rise of Kennedy to the presidency (not to mention the implication that the film's young-Kennedy-stand-in is merely a tame Irishman-puppet of ye olde repressive WASP regimes). The politics of this film are far more fascinating, and far more palatable than Ford's hagiographic confederacy worship in many of his films.

Shocked at how highly you are placing Two Rode Together! Despite it's beauty and the first half hour or so, the film tonally feels all over the place and doesn't land for me at all. There's a crazed anger and outrage to Stewart that seemed so un-Fordlike when I watched this.
