Magnolia will be added to FilmStruck* tomorrow.

*Not sure how long this has been the case without our forum recognizing it (probably the whole time!), but they appear to be branding themselves with the S capitalized now so I updated the thread title accordingly

FilmStruck was extra generous today. Usually on Fridays they've been adding about 20 films, but today we got 41! Mostly Classic Hollywood with spotlights on Vincente Minnelli, Charles Laughton, and a collection of John Ford comedies, including the notorious Tobacco Road, which I've been wanting to see after reading the savaging it got on the John Ford thread.

This is a great streaming service--it just keeps improving. I do wish that they gave some info on the transfers of the films they offer. I've been told by customer service that everything they show is upscaled to 1080P, but there's no indication of what films are from HD. For example, is the version of Il Bidone they have the SD version, or the newer restoration available on BD in Europe?

Mfunk, how did you find out about Magnolia a day early?

Since the TCM news, they've almost doubled their output, putting up five new categories each Friday instead of three. Which have been excellent now that it doesn't feel like there's a weird bottleneck on the studio titles.

Looking at the standard FilmStruck channel and despite not being on the Criterion channel yet, the following have Criterion branding and begin with the Janus logo:

Something Different - Chytilová
Christo's Valley Curtain - Maysles
Running Fence - Maysles
Islands - Maysles
Christo in Paris - Mayles

I'm literally expecting the BFI Blu-ray to be delivered today, so rest assured that CC will announce it next month.

Is there a way to see what films will be debuting on the TCM side?

I don't know of any way to find out specific films, but you can sort of poke your nose around the website and see what banners are coming up. For example, the Director of the Week: Yasujiro Ozu banner has a URL that ends in 663. Add one digit at a time — 664, 665 — and you can get a rough idea of what's coming. I just checked and there are 51 bundles lined up (and one that's already live, Cinematography by Russell Boyd).

Thanks for sharing. But isn't this a bit like kids peeking in their parents' closet to see what they will get for Christmas? :D

I enjoy my Thursday late evenings when I can see under "Recently Added" a bunch of new films and then I guess what kind of collection this will be (easy for directors and stars). The banner is usually there on Friday morning with the full collection.

Seems to be another complete “outage” right now. Not amused, seeing it’s my day off and was hoping to catch some films that expire tomorrow! What’s really annoying is that during these outages I’m prompted to sign in again, but the sign in doesn’t “take” As great as the service can be, there’s still an element of not being ready for prime time IMHO.

That may be true, but there must be some way to avoid error messages like “you don’t have a valid subscription”, going through the process of typing in login credentials, not being able to login, and then realizing the problem is not on my end but theirs. That is amateurish web interface design.

Things do seem to be back now, but my criticisms of the interface stand.

I wish they had a more comprehensive "recently watched"-type feature. As far as it is on Amazon Fire, you can only do that with the movies themselves, and not the other videos available to watch.

FilmStruck has put a bunch of African films up.

Ousmane Sembene's "Xala" and "Guelwaar" both open with Criterion and Janus logos, along with "Black Girl".

Yet the documentary "Sembene!" about him is with Kino, along with Souleymane Cisse "Yeelen" which I heard is great.

Djibril Diop Mambety "Hyenas" is up too but unfortunately the transfer looks quite bad.

The latest TCM Inner Circle survey is polling users for a new name for the Criterion Channel.

These are the options given:

Criterion Theater
Filmstruck Presents
Criterion Present
Criterion Direct
Criterion Cinema

I picked the first but it's the best of a bad lot.

Honestly Criterion Channel is probably the best one? I’m not sure why they need to change it, but I guess I’d pick Criterion Direct
