Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (J.J. Abrams, 2019)
Colin Trevorrow, director of Jurassic World, will helm 'Star Wars: Episode IX'.
I've never been big of a fan of the 'Star Wars' franchise, but this is hugely disappointing news considering J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson are heading up the first couple of films in the next trilogy.

He's replacing Trank so at worst it's a lateral move.

Re: The Star Wars Franchise
Trank was actually set to direct the second "Anthology" film, either about Boba Fett or a young Han Solo, I forget.

Re: The Star Wars Franchise
It was the Boba Fett one, which still doesn't have a director and was pushed back to 2020.
Meanwhile, Gareth Edwards' Rogue One will feature appearances from, uh, Jiang Wen and Donnie Yen.

Trevorrow's Episode IX script getting rewrites from Jack Thorne, who has nothing to be optimistic about in his CV

Who knows? Afterall the writer of American Pie did the script for Rogue One and everyone liked that, right?

Rogue One was yet another film in this franchise which made me scratch my head as to why it's so beloved.knives wrote:Who knows? Afterall the writer of American Pie did the script for Rogue One and everyone liked that, right?

He's being sarcastic-- in contrast to the Force Awakens, almost no one on this forum liked Rogue One

Have you seen his t.v. work? Skins tends to split opinions, but his work seems to be mostly on the stronger early episodes. The various This Is England mini-series are excellent and The Fades is superb and rightly won the Bafta for best drama series in its year.domino harvey wrote:Trevorrow's Episode IX script getting rewrites from Jack Thorne, who has nothing to be optimistic about in his CV

Chris Weitz co-directed American Pie, but unless you know about an uncredited re-write, did not write it. It was written by Adam Herz.knives wrote:Who knows? Afterall the writer of American Pie did the script for Rogue One and everyone liked that, right?

Oh wow, how did I miss that he was a writer for Skins? I rescind my initial comment and am now cautiously optimistic-- thanks for pointing this out!rawlinson wrote:Have you seen his t.v. work? You're welcome. If you like Skins I'd suggest tracking down The Fades. It sadly only got one series despite the awards success, but it has a similar teen vibe with a supernatural bent, some Skins cast members cross over too - Daniel Kaluuya, Lily Loveless, Joe Dempsie.domino harvey wrote:Oh wow, how did I miss that he was a writer for Skins? I mean Carrie was still alive when Colin started to write episode 9, so maybe that's part of the reason for rewriting with someone else.

Agreed, but in light of all that's happened with Han Solo, I get it...Ribs wrote:It's just a super boring, unexciting choice.
I'll start the speculation of a possible storyline. He has to be related to Rey somehow, so this might be her origin story - however in the hell that's possible with the timeline. I'll also lay good money the villain is Vader - but I wouldn't mind a crazy Castaway like Obi Wan story, with no villain.
While Vader does mention last seeing him as a student, Tarkin says that Obi Wan must be dead...which doesn't make sense since he defeated Vader. It doesn't read as an age thing either...

Thank God. Even with the producers' less than stellar reputation of interfering with directors, they could probably get literally anyone they wanted and his choice never made sense

I expect the casual switcheroo Disney did with Toy Story to make sure Incredibles 2 would be pushed up to be next year was done totally aware it would free up Brad Bird for this if needed, the person they've most wanted for this franchise since the acquisition (and the one who brought them Trevorrow in the first place)

I'm not sure this is the saving grace it would have been were he never signed on. Disney seems pretty confident about their release schedule, so surely Trevorrow started pre-production?Ribs wrote:Trevorrow is gone, thank goodness

Brad Bird would be a blessing, but at the rate they've been going lately I'd half expect them to bring in some bland journeyman like Edward Zwick to direct.

Frankly I'd rather Bird do something weird and personal. His journeyman efforts so far have been significantly less good than his other stuff.

Same goes for Rian Johnson and J.J. Abrams, if we’re playing that game.

Re: Star Wars Franchise (1977-∞)
I think, to be fair, Abrams was being used in just the right way and would more heavily level the poor use of journeyman claim to his Star Treks. Whereas those films are plainly antithetical to what works for him Star Wars and, ironically, Mission: Impossible are things he would seemingly come to independently anyway.mfunk9786 wrote:Same goes for Rian Johnson and J.J.
