Except for the cover of Pan, the content will be identical so I dont see me buying both at all, rather just the BDs.

So the content of both the DVD and bluray are identical?

I thought I read somewhere there was a difference in supplemental interviews. But maybe I dreamt that.

No, the discs are supposed to be the same as far as I can see. The difference is really just the book with an exclusive essay.

Now that we're closer to the release date and that we know the final product has already had one print run, I emailed Mulvaney about this possibility, to know if it's still feasible or not. As usual when I email them about things different from a simple replacement program, I haven't had any feedback yet. I'll update this if I do get one at some point.

Seeing the captures for Pan's Labyrinth, I can't help but think this looks more like The Spirit of the Beehive (and I believe that was cited as an influence for this film and for GDT in general).

GDT was pretty open about the influence of Erice. PL is a lot more fantastic, but the central thesis of both films: fascist Franco horror seen through the eyes of an innocent child-is quite similar.

I ordered it today through the flash sale, but since I did get the previous two, I'm mildly disappointed that I won't be getting the box ;).

I just saw GDT's own copy of this poster at the Minneapolis Institute of Art's "At Home with Monsters" show. Such a gorgeous piece. I'm not sure if the museum had just a print or the original, but it looked like the original (there was plenty of texture and substance, though it could have been reprinted on a canvas I suppose). It made me want this poster even more.

Incidentally, they were selling copies of the Trilogía at the MIA, in addition to the "At Home with Monsters" shirts and a nice looking book (I picked up both). Several people were buying the boxed sets in the gift shop, and that made me happy to see, for Criterion's sake.

New Line/WB has announced an upcoming UHD 4K release of Pan's Labyrinth, which I believe is the first time one of the licensed major studio titles has subsequently got a UHD release after a Criterion BD release (at least in the US).

People have been complaining about the older Universal BD being DNRed and all, so I guess it started from a good intention.

Pan's Labyrinth is getting a 4K UHD release from Warner on October 1. I suppose this will be the first 4K release of a film currently in print from Criterion.

High marks for the UHD release
This is $9.99 for Black Friday on Amazon, etc. If the Criterion release weren't useless before, it certainly is now.

The Blu-ray.com reviewer preferred it, but there was actually some debate elsewhere about whether the Criterion may still be preferable. I would keep both if someone already has the Criterion. Besides the 7.1 mix (which for some reason was dropped by the UHD), the grading for both has a few subtle but noticeable differences where it probably comes down to taste rather than which is "better." (Del Toro was involved with the Criterion release, FWIW.) I wish they did a new 4K scan of the 35mm negative, but I'm guessing they would have to re-do the VFX as well, hence the use of the 2K intermediate for both releases.

I feel the milky blacks full of blocky compression noise on the Criterion make it look the worst of all releases by far. The UHD is a huge improvement.

No way, the first BD was a wax museum. Both the UHD and Criterion BD's are substantial upgrades from that.

EDIT: I was wondering if the Criterion BD really looked worse than what I remembered. After looking at a couple of screen grabs elsewhere, I went ahead and watched the BD again, but on my old HDTV. The blacks actually did not look milky and looked much deeper than what I saw in the screen grabs - but that may be due to the settings I left for my HDTV. I calibrated it once to my tastes using bars and tones from another BD and left it as is - I didn't crush the dark end of the spectrum, but I left it dark enough so that the change in gradations was fairly subtle rather than pushing it up too much to make it feel it's been boosted (at least to my eyes). Playing the disc on an HDTV might've helped too - I generally find TV resolutions matching the source resolution to be much more pleasing than any up-conversion. So it still looks great on this end, but on the 4K TV the upconversion used to create the UHD is likely preferable to just letting some component of the playback chain upconvert any of the BD editions.

The compression of the Criterion actually pretty much is the only issue of this release (I doubt the milky blacks would have gotten that much traction otherwise). Many of the older releases were indeed intensively DNRed, the Criterion release is a clear upgrade from that in terms of texture and overall definition.

Yeah I wasn't actually aware the New Line release in the US was so badly hit with DNR. The Optimum version of the same transfer in the UK looked fine, and overall, much better than the Criterion. I mean, just yuck. Not only does the Criterion have horrible milky blacks but shadow detail is also crushed out!
