Brighter Summer Day will no doubt get the stand alone release it deserves. But I guess we'll know more tomorrow.
I also expect A Brighter Summer Day to be a stand alone release, as I would prefer. It will, however, be interesting to see whether a stand alone release will have any sort of WCP branding on it.

It unfortunate that there is a lack of Taiwanese directors work out on Blu-ray at the moment, especially the lack of Edward Yang.

The big problem with the WCP is that Scorsese's company works with film archives to restore these films but Criterion/MOC still needs to work out deals with the rights holders to make them commercially available. I suspect that finding and negotiating rights in (often) third world countries is highly problematic and is why both companies have had a lack of output on dvd/blu.

Maybe I'm totally out to lunch here...but wasn't part of the problem with licensing A Brighter Summer Day is that some of the funds to produce the film turned out to originate from criminal organizations?

Pretty sure this is true (or at least what I've been hearing as well).

This from the Wexner program coming in Feb. This will happen weeks to a month before the releases if they are announced tomorrow, which makes sense.
Known for its unparalleled film library and its exquisitely produced and packaged restorations, the Criterion Collection sets the gold standard for important releases on home video. The company frequently partners with the world’s archives, searching for the best available material before embarking on a painstaking restoration process. In this presentation, Lee Kline and Phoebe Harmon provide a behind-the-scenes look at upcoming releases A Brighter Summer Day (Edward Yang, 1991) and The Manchurian Candidate (John Frankenheimer, 1962), which screens on Saturday. (program approx. 90 mins.)

I appreciate them telling us about the "delay." That's something at least.

It's not a delay when there was never a deadline to begin with.

That would explain why I wrote the word delay in quotation marks.

The early releases of people pages are really dampening the excitement of announcement day.

I, for one, think its unfair that Brighter Summer Day might get a stand-alone release, as if Dry Summer, The Housemaid, or Touki Bouki were just chopped liver; or any of the other WCF releases that would be forthcoming.

Unfair, but sensible.

Yes, but the length of Yang's film, the potential presence of multiple cuts, and the potential lack of rights to other titles in and of itself would make it difficult to fit into a boxset. The sensibility you sight seems to remove any potential unfairness or discrediting. Also, frankly, I'm far gladder given Crit's rate of release to have a bunch thrown out like they did then trickled out.

Even with the Yang film as a single release, from my count they have rights to enough of WCF titles for a second boxset. Both Revenge and Law of the Border are on Hulu plus there are phantom pages for Peixoto, Sembene, Parajanov and de Toth. It is possible though, that they decide that the Sembenes and the Parajanov have enough of a reputation that they could market them as single releases like the Yang.

Is she waiting to hear about our March titles? We're sorry, but the announcement has been pushed back another day.

That's from "Paris nous appartient" and the grey square just seems to be a reel change mark.
