Re: Bruno Dumont
Does anyone know if an English language based distributor will be releasing Hadewijch soon? I know there is already a Dutch, and a French release, but neither have subtitles and I'm dying to see this great film again.

Re: Bruno Dumont
IFC already put it out in theater(s) in December. I imagine a dvd will follow - maybe even from Criterion.TheDoman wrote:Does anyone know if an English language based distributor will be releasing Hadewijch soon? Re: Bruno Dumont
I'd bloody well hope from Criterion, given the general standard of IFC-sourced rubbish that makes it into the collection these days.
As for New Wave, by this point it'll really serve them right if the Criterion disc comes out first and eats into their sales.

Re: Bruno Dumont
New Wave seem to be biting off more than they can chew. They are constantly picking up excellent films from major festivals, but seem to be struggling to get them released.
The website still says 'Spring 2011' for Hadewijch, but so many much more recent films have jumped ahead in their schedule. It's now been over 16 months since I saw this at the LFF.
Talk about striking while the iron is freezing cold.

How is Hadewijch by the way? Where does it rank in the Dumont Canon? I've been waiting - in vain- I suspect for Criterion to give it the Blu treatment, but am thinking of caving and watching SD.

Re: Bruno Dumont
Hadewijch is quite different from the other Dumont's. It feels freed from his usual visual mannerisms. It's 1:1,66 not cinemascope as his other films, which in this case I've heard Dumont needed to have the more verticality in the shots -> sky -> heaven. It's more talkative than the other Dumonts. And it must be one of the best contemporary film about the (religious) terrorism. But most of all it's film about enlightenment, the need to find connection with god. The dialogue is sharp, fascinating. And acting, the girl in the lead and the young man playing the charismatic lead of the muslim center are brilliant. You really start to understand the mindset of a religious fanatic capable of extreme actions. It's strange how little attention the film got at the time of its release.

In my opinion its one of his three best films, others being Life of Jesus + L'humanité.

Re: Bruno Dumont
Meanwhile, Kino Lorber has apparently put out their DVD of Camille Claudel 1915, which I don't think has been mentioned yet. DVDTalk gives good marks, still a good chance for Soda Pictures to improve with a Blu release (and maybe bring over the documentary from the French disc?)

Blaq Out are releasing a boxed set of all of Dumont's films on 21 October in France. No word yet if the set will contain English subtitles. Listings for the set in both blu ray and DVD formats are up on Amazon and Fnac.

Re: Bruno Dumont
Blaqout have a pretty good track record with subs. However P'tit Quinquin (in its separate listing) is shown as having french subs only but that's just Amazon who are not exactly highly qualified on these matters.
It looks like from a cursory bit of math that PQ is included in the box and here's hoping that the interviews and introductions from the recent retrospective at La Rochelle festival will be included. Incidentally, the Retrospective 'Hommage' stakes were shared by Our Bruno and a Czech animation programme hosted by Jiri Barta, as well as some Fassbinder titbits fronted by Hanna Schygulla. How's that for a line up?

Re: Bruno Dumont
Holy crap, this is exciting. Subs or not, I'm getting that Blu-ray box (unless an English-friendly release is announced soon)
BTW are people aware that there is a brunodumont.com? Never came across it until just now, although it's apparently been up for some years: there's a bunch of texts to be found there (all in French), including an entire 250-page dissertation on his films, an interview, and the complete screenplays for L'Humanité and La Vie de Jésus.

That might suggest that a deal with a UK company is on the cards. Hard to say who might bite the bullet. Soda? New Wave?runner82 wrote:I received an email from Blaq Out confirming that English subtitles will not be included for any of the films.

Re: Bruno Dumont
Or it might just suggest excess optimism on the licensors' part that someone will But supposing someone has already, then the question remains: will they have enough confidence to go Blu/dual, or will English-speaking Dumont fans once again have to make do with SD? The latter would make for a rather pointless release, seeing as almost everything save Quinquin is already available in serviceable editions.

Re: Bruno Dumont
I'd read a few conflicting bits of information as to whether P'tit quinquin is included in the box set or not (plus the "1997-2014" threw me a bit, as the years indicated suggest it would be included), so I emailed Blaq Out. They've just replied to confirm no, it's not included, so the set will include the 7 feature films (so La Vie de Jésus to Camille Claudel 1915). I'll pick up P'tit quinquin when it comes out 2 weeks before the box set now I know there's no point in holding off.

Re: Bruno Dumont
A quick follow-up on P'tit Quinquin being 1080i50. I was under the impression 1080p25 was part of the bluray spec, but it apparently is not! So, seeing as it was shot 1080p25 on the Red Epic (intended after all primarily for 25fps French TV) the only options were either 1080i50 or a slowed 1080p24. Can't really argue with that.
Someone from Blaq Out answered about this on the DVD Classik forums and added that the upcoming Dumont box set would be all new restored 1080p24 transfers. It's been pushed back to January.

Re: Bruno Dumont
1080i50 can hold 1080p25 content. Most European tv is released as 1080i50. Fucking English subtitles are the real problem here on this and the set. Oh well, after the Rohmer set I suppose I should just count my blessings.Oedipax wrote:A quick follow-up on P'tit Quinquin being 1080i50. Re: Bruno Dumont
Just wanted to mention here if anyone's curious, I received the Dumont box set from Blaq Out a couple days ago, and it's a stunning release. Every film up through Camille Claudel 1915 has been given a top notch HD transfer, which hugely surpass the previous editions of the films on DVD, as well as standing up on their own as great 1080p24 transfers.
There are interviews and documentary making-of features on each disc, and Flandres has a commentary track (from the film's initial French DVD release, I don't think it was subtitled/ported anywhere else) and the original ending, which from what I understand was changed in part because of pressure upon submitting to Cannes - I haven't looked at the extras for this yet, so I hope it will be more fully explained there. Hors Satan includes both the original theatrical mono audio mix (essential in my opinion) as well as a stereo mix that must've been required to sell in certain territories.
The films feature French SDH subtitles, while the extras have no subtitles at all. Fingers crossed we'll see an English-friendly release of this set, it's already going to be hard to top this year for me. Super comprehensive, impeccably realized box set. Bravo Blaq Out.

Re: Bruno Dumont
Has Blaq Out said why they chose to forgo English subs? It just seems like such a no-brainer. The set could still be region-locked if they wanted. I just don't get it.
