I'm trying to do the maths here, and with a $29.7M US Box office score, either the budget or the marketing $$ is completely wrong, or I'm missing something. As for why On the Come Up didn’t make the cut, a source says Thomas’ last project, The Hate U Give, lost $30 million-$40 million despite a modest $23 million budget and a marketing spend believed to be about $30 million.

Re: West Side Story (Steven Spielberg, 2020)
Divide $29.7 by half, which is the net gross for the studio. And add that $30 million on the marketing you get somewhere in the $38-40 million loss range.tenia wrote: ↑Wed Apr 24, 2019 3:10 pmCremildo wrote: ↑Wed Apr 24, 2019 2:21 pmDisney exec Alan Horn is concerned about young characters smoking cigarettes in the movie.I'm trying to do the maths here, and with a $29.7M US Box office score, either the budget or the marketing $$ is completely wrong, or I'm missing something. As for why On the Come Up didn’t make the cut, a source says Thomas’ last project, The Hate U Give, lost $30 million-$40 million despite a modest $23 million budget and a marketing spend believed to be about $30 million.

Signature Theater in Arlington VA did a great production of this just a couple of years ago. The show still works. . .Michael Kerpan wrote: ↑Mon Aug 18, 2014 3:43 pmWest Side Story still works pretty good -- performed live, on stage...
Movie buffs might also be interested in their current show. If you happen to be in the DC area - Grant Hotel - the Musical plays through Mid-May.

We already have a thread for this kind of thing, and indeed literally this thing

Apologies. I did not see that. My intention was to talk about this movie's fate rather than the details of the allegation. Feel free to move this post and the post above to appropriate threads.

Re: Steven Spielberg
Guess I'm a little late to this, probably because I saw "Steven Spielberg" before I saw "West Side Story" & so completely passed it by.
Poltergeist ....and it already happened.FrauBlucher wrote: ↑Mon Aug 18, 2014 5:27 pmI wonder which Spielberg film will be the first to be re-made?
So they won't be vaping on the sly? If you're updating it to make it relevant to a younger generation, you should probably update it to make it relevant to a younger generation..... but of course if you were doing that you wouldn't have Spielberg direct.Cremildo wrote: ↑Wed Apr 24, 2019 2:21 pmDisney exec Alan Horn is concerned about young characters smoking cigarettes in the movie.

The song "Gee, Officer Krupke" has been replaced by the newly-written "ACAB."

Re: Steven Spielberg
Just saw this Dave Kehr tweet from mid-September...I haven't seen anyone make a similar remark, but is this in reference to a trailer or teaser?

Supposedly the majority of Spanish spoken in the movie will not be subtitled.
What an asinine decision.

I thought the joke was based on some tangible observation, especially coming from a film critic, buuuuut I guess not.

Re: West Side Story (Steven Spielberg, 2021)
Even if he had seen it all the way back then, surely the film would have been embargoed at that point, no? (That plus the other person in the comments riffing on what Kehr said makes me agree that it seems to be a joke)

MS13 vs the Proud Boys maybe? People have been complaining that the big auteurs don't make films about the present moment (notable exceptions: Paul Schrader and Abel Ferrara)

Bradshaw loves it and confirms much (all?) of the Spanish dialogue is unsubbed.

Re: West Side Story (Steven Spielberg, 2021)
They're (rightly) assuming that the movie will have a large Spanish-speaking audience and this is one more way that the remake was made with them in mind in a way the original wasn't.Monterey Jack wrote: ↑Tue Nov 30, 2021 11:02 pmSupposedly the majority of Spanish spoken in the movie will not be subtitled.

Re: West Side Story (Steven Spielberg, 2021)
I wonder if this will be true in non-U.S. English-speaking markets. The Spanish-speaking population of Canada is significantly less than in the U.S., and I'm sure that's true for the U.K., Ireland, Australia, etc.

Or I can just ask my wife to translate all of it for me, which I'm sure will annoy no one, least of all my wife.swo17 wrote:Just for the record, Spanish is probably the easiest language to learn
