Re: The Irishman (Martin Scorsese, 2019)
Someone has tried to correlate his beliefs here. and well it's Kubrickian.
As for Scorsese's films I've never gotten the idea that he's endorsed individuals like Bickle or Henry Hill. But the audience endorsement seems be more commonplace with a lot of gangster pictures at least from my experience. How many of you knew someone growing up who thought Tony Montana was the coolest guy ever?

Really nothing new. When I was growing up, all the kids in my neighborhood watched the old gangster films from the 30's and 40's, we all thought the Bogart, Cagney and Edward G. Robinson's characters were the coolest.

Even though I love it quite a bit, De Palma's Scarface might be the worst offender of the lot.

Don't forget Scarface. The documentary on the Blu-Ray about the film's influence on the hip-hop/rap lifestyle is scarier than anything in the actual movie.

If you can think of a better way to hear a Rolling Stones song, I'd like to know about it.

This is either going to be great or an absolute turkey.

Re: The Irishman (Martin Scorsese, 2019)
Agree. But after watching a couple of trailers and seeing pics off their IMDB page all I can see is a bunch of really old guys. Fingers crossed that it's not just a geriatric reunion from hollywood's great past.

Re: The Irishman (Martin Scorsese, 2019)
A couple of trailers? Was there another prior to the one released during the Oscars? Also, the really old guys will be de-aged for about half of the film, won't they?

Re: The Irishman (Martin Scorsese, 2019)
That's weird I thought I fixed it. Meant clips not trailers.
Ooooh, I don't know. That will definitely help if they are de-aged. That sounds more interesting to me.

This teaser is getting justly dragged everywhere, I imagine we will get a real one with footage soon to counteract the bad first impression

One can only hope that the FX team behind the trailer with its cgI shell casing has nothing to do with the de-aging in the movie itself, otherwise these actors gonna look like they're out of Animaniacs.

Re: The Irishman (Martin Scorsese, 2019)
I was thinking more of flashbacks a la Godfather 2. I hope it's not CGI. That would suck! Although maybe that's why it has become such an expensive film. Ugh.

It’s CGI applied to actual footage of the older actors

This from the Wikipedia page
Not sure how I feel about this. It'll have to be a wait and see.Industrial Light & Magic and VFX Supervisor Rob Legato are handling the effects for the film.[33] By March 5, 2018, it was also reported the film's budget had ballooned from $125 million to $140 million, due in large part to the visual effects needed to make De Niro, Pesci, and Pacino appear up to 30 years younger at various points throughout the film.[34] By August of that year, the cost had risen to as much as $175 million, the most expensive of Scorsese's career.[1]

Re: The Irishman (Martin Scorsese, 2019)
They should have just cast other actors for the younger parts, as I suspect the uncanny valley will be too strong here

Re: The Irishman (Martin Scorsese, 2019)
The uncanny valley effect is something everybody is concerned about, but the technology is only getting better. I haven't scrutinized any of the Captain Marvel spots too closely, but from the glimpses I've seen the de-aged Samuel L. Jackson looks pretty convincing, more so than I remember Rogue One's Peter Cushing / Carrie Fisher looking.
This also might open up an interesting conversation with regards to later revisionism. Because the de-aging is applied to raw performances, assuming footage of those performances is preserved, could the filmmakers / future restoration teams revisit the film later and improve the look of the de-aging (if deemed necessary) when the technology to do so inevitably improves? Would this be met with the same controversy as certain other filmmakers' attempts to change their own work?
