2010s Dynamic Consensus Lists

#1 Post by swo17 » Mon Mar 14, 2011 12:35 pm

In accordance with Article 3755 of the U.S. Patriot Act, I make routine sweeps through the Dynamic Top Ten threads every month or so in order to discern trends in the groupthink of the forum that can eventually be used against it. The reports I present to some guy who says he works for the government are presented for your amusement below.

The fine print: Only the top ten films have been counted from the lists in the Dynamic Top Ten threads since 2009, and lists of less than ten have not been counted. Lists submitted by members for years before they joined the site are not being tallied. Lists not updated since early in the year are only partially counted. (Exception: I count all lists for the current year, even those that don't list ten films yet. Once the year ends, I remove any lists that haven't been filled out to ten.) Each film is assigned to the year here where the most people have included it on their lists, but a mention of the film in the Dynamic Top Ten thread for any year counts toward that film's total. Films are ranked based on how many lists they currently appear on, with ties broken based on the relative placement of films within individual lists. Anything appearing on three or more lists that isn't in the top 25 for a given year is shown (in alphabetical order) as an honorable mention. In addition to showing the number of appearances, I'm also showing the change in position of certain films, either since the last update (for the latest year) or from the end of the last awards season (for all prior years). The only changes in position I'm showing are ones that directly result from people adding that film to their list, taking it off, or moving its position. Finally, the consensus #1 film shown for each year is the film that shows up most often in the #1 position of people's lists.

The key word here, folks, is "dynamic." Any member of the forum is welcome at any time to contribute lists in current and prior years, and everyone is free (and in fact, encouraged) to update their lists not only throughout the year, but well after each year has finished, to reflect new discoveries or reevaluations.

As a final note, I'd just like to say that, while it can be fun to watch some of the heavier hitters duke it out for each year's top spots, my real hope with these lists is that people will take note of the lesser known films that have started to build a small consensus, and that they'll go to the effort of seeking those films out for themselves.

Re: Consensus Lists from the Dynamic Top Ten Threads Since 2

#2 Post by swo17 » Thu Dec 22, 2011 1:07 pm

If only for matrixschmatrix's benefit, I've gone ahead and updated the post above to reflect the updates to the consensus lists based on where the Dynamic Top 10 threads currently stand. I intend to update this thread regularly (at least once a week) until the end of awards season, so that the consensus lists can be about as dynamic as the individual lists are.

Once again, there are no rules to how you can post in the Dynamic Top 10 threads, but if you'd like your individual lists to be fully reflected here, make sure they meet the following criteria:

1. It's clear from your list what your top 10 films of the year currently are.
2. Your list for a given year was either created or most recently edited sometime since November of that year, even if only to say "my list stands as is."

Also important: You can assign films to years however you prefer. This doesn't need to match how I've assigned them above. I'll find them wherever you put them.

As a final note, there are several people who have made lists in the 2011 thread that either don't have lists in prior years at all or don't have lists that meet the above criteria, and so aren't being fully counted. If this applies to you, feel free to make a new post or to edit your posts in those older threads, and I'll catch them at the next update.

Also, um, feel free to make comments in this thread.

Does anybody bother updating the old ones? I basically see new stuff only on disc now, the result of which is that I'm usually 9-12 months behind. I only compiled a 2010 top ten list this month, and I figured no one would care (assuming, that is, that anyone would've cared a year ago).

As you can see from all the movement in 2009 and especially 2010, yes, some people bother to update their lists. Which is the whole reason I'm doing this. If you have a 2010 list to share, post away!

I updated my 2009 and 2010 lists to reflect the consensus on years.
I'm near the Top of Page 2 on both lists.
Basically I shifted 3 films off of 2010, which were on both lists, so you might have counted my next few already.

I have no idea you know what has dropped off someone's list and been replaced by something new when someone edits their list.
I put the changes in red, so it should be fairly clear.
Feel free to delete this post after you input those changes.

Without revealing too many of my secrets, it's a relatively simple exercise for me to find lists that have changed by just searching for posts with recent edit dates.

I get that.
I was wondering about you know which film was edited in and, harder, which was removed.
I guess there aren't that many lists, so as long as you've saved them somewhere you can compare the old saved list to the new edited list.
Keep up the good work ...

So if we go back over old lists, do we take IMDB as the date or the dates we saw them, given the vagaries of UK distribution?

For your own personal lists, you can use whatever dates are easiest/make the most sense for you. I'll find your mention of a film wherever you put it. I mean, unless you put it under a rock somewhere and not on this forum. I won't find it there.

I'm still catching up to 2011 films and updating my list.
I've seen twenty three 2011 films and have another 15 on my To See list.
I imagine I can't be the only one.
So you might want to poke back into that year in a month or so.

Also, next to each year could you put the total number of lists, if not too much trouble? I started getting curious how many lists left off the top vote-getter.
And what percent of lists contained some others I was partial to

There are a number of 2011 (and 2010 and 2009) films I haven't seen either yet, but the idea is for these lists to capture how the consensus is evolving from one year to the next, so I've got to cut off the year at some point. Yeah, the lists will always look different a month from now, two months from now, etc., but this will be captured the next time I start updating (see for example the big 2010 leaps for Certified Copy and Poetry).

That being said, I'll admit that cutting the year off at the beginning of March is sort of arbitrary (other than coming shortly after the Oscars are over). When would everyone like the cutoff to be? Yes, some big 2011 films are coming out in March, but the same could also be said for April, May, and June. And those are just the films everyone knows about.

This is kind of difficult and/or meaningless to count since many lists are a mix of films from several different years. For example, Certified Copy is classified as a 2010 film but mostly shows up on lists in the 2011 thread (which is when it was released in the U.S.).

If it's not too much trouble can you update once a quarter? If not, maybe mid year would be a good cut off since you'll restart at the end of the year?

It will give you guys something to look forward to next November. That's when swo rides into town with his sackful of lists for all the girls and boys who have been good all year. That's when the Awards Season thread comes back and the Top Tens thread for this year will start to heat up. The interest in list-making and award-giving are really only at their peak November through February, which is good because I don't think I could take it for a whole year. An annual eight month period of dormancy seems appropriate for that stuff.

I went ahead and updated the first post again, because why not. I suppose I don't see the harm in keeping it updated throughout the year (maybe once every couple weeks?) to keep tabs on what movies forum members recommend checking out while most of them are still in theaters. If this decision ruins anyone's life, please let me know.

I know you put "Change since *date*" after each list, but would it be possible to add a "Last Updated" date as well? It'd be a lot easier to be able to tell what's what with each list if both dates were there.

It already automatically says at the bottom of the post when it was that I last updated it. Are you looking for something more than this?
