THE ST. VALENTINE'S DAY MASSACRE
(Roger Corman, 1967)
Release date: 22 April 2018
Limited Blu-ray Edition (UK Blu-ray premiere) - pre-order here
Roger Corman’s most ambitious and expensive production – his only film for a major studio – is a violent and lurid account of the events leading up to one of the most infamous events in American crime history. Detailing the bitter and brutal rivalry between feuding Chicago mob bosses Al Capone and ‘Bugs’ Moran, Corman’s vividly realised film features terrific performances from Jason Robards, Ralph Meeker and George Segal, and remains one of Corman’s best films.

Dramatically different than The Twilight Time release.

I would assume that the TT is not a 4K transfer which I thought was apparent from the announcement of this release.

CineOutsider:
The release of any Roger Corman film on Blu-ray is a cause for quiet celebration, hence my glee at the news that one of the most enjoyable works from a particularly creative period of his career (it was made after his run of Edgar Allen Poe films and between the censor-baiting duo of The Wild Angels and The Trip) was being released on Blu-ray by Indicator. No surprises that it lives up to expectations, with a lovely HD transfer and some worthwhile special features, the cream of which is the excellent booklet. Enthusiastically recommended.

Re: 72 The St Valentine's Day Massacre
Wonderful film. Loved the fight between Segal and his girlfriend. The use of objects and spatial transitions in particular. The end Massacre with the guys lined up against a brick wall, the bullets gouging holes in the bricks. Wonderfully cast from the leads down to the smallest roles, Bruce Dern, Jack Nicholson, Tom Signorelli, Joe Turkel, Dick Smith & Alex Rocco. Very impressive and I agree with David Pirie’s assessment that it’s among Corman’s absolute best.
And one marvellously healthy Blu ray transfer. Maybe the best I’ve seen of a ‘60s colour film (along with The Swimmer by Grindhouse). Have to say I’m ready for another gangster classic, Underworld USA (from Indicator’s Fuller Box).

Re: 72 The St Valentine's Day Massacre
Sadly, the rights to this Fox (now Disney) title couldn't be renewed, and so The St Valentine's Day Massacre will be going OOP even in the standard edition on 30 June 2023.
But it's still available as of today - and it's included in Powerhouse's 3 for £20 bundle, along with the other four affected titles (Dragonwyck, Little Murders, The Snake Pit, The Third Secret).
