Daredevil

#1 Post by ianungstad » Wed Apr 01, 2015 6:40 pm

The reviews for Daredevil have been stellar so far. I'm also excited and usually I don't like Superhero stuff. (HATED Guardians of the Galaxy). It seems like they succeeded on their promise of doing something darker and influenced by Frank Miller's run on the comic. Several reviews have stated it's more akin to the Nolan Batman films than the Marvel Universe movies.

Haven't watched Bloodline yet. I did try the first couple episodes of Marco Polo. Just awful. The worst thing Netflix ever greenlighted. Makes Hemlock Grove look like Shakespear.

While I'm not as interested in Daredevil, this does slightly ease my fears on how they were going to treat/adapt the source-material (Alias) for AKA Jessica Jones, which was far more "adult" in tone and content than most of the other Marvel shows and features so far. I'm glad they're mildly embracing the freedom that the format provides them. It makes sense given the projects that they've chosen to launch using Netflix rather than ABC.

I'm glad that Disney is not balking at TV-MA for this. Hopefully it's a babystep towards an R rating for a property like The Punisher, if they ever get around to it.

About midway through Daredevil. Have to admit I'm not up on the other Marvel shows (and I've only really seen the Iron Man movies otherwise) and comic book shows in general, but I'm a sucker for the dichotomy of gritty realism and superheroes so this is a joy to watch. I like it most that it's not wall-to-wall violence and characters are given a bit more room to breathe and develop than some of these other shows. It's not going for the full TV-MA experience, it feels more like something more at home on FX or AMC than the premiums. As I said, maybe it's a babystep towards a more fully MA experience like The Punisher could be.

The five-minute long, one-take fight scene at the end of Daredevil's second episode hooked me. Really enjoying the show.

Another thing I like is that the fight scenes are mostly like that and not choppy at all.

I found Daredevil to be hit-or-miss, especially from a characterization perspective and for Marvel's unwillingness to escape the origin-story trap. I think this one comes close to it for a while, but then too readily retreats to familiar learning-the-ropes beats.

The show also suffers from the Marvel "nothing is insignificant" issue. Nutshelled: the fan service, Easter-egging, and classic story allusions imbue everything not with significance but with the potential significance, drowning out novel plot and character moments, which are then amplified to the point of indelicacy to be distinct from, like, Stilt-Man's stilts or whatever in the background.

I also think the mature tone, though mostly welcome, is sometimes indelicately deployed, as though there was some sort of expletive and blood quota to be met per episode; it struck me as a child excitedly cursing.

That said--some of the plot machinations really work and I liked how the show is folded into Marvel's Cinematic continuity. I also think it passes muster as a proof-of-concept for Marvel's Netflix model. On the whole I enjoyed it more than I expected to.

I am only 4 episodes in to Daredevil but it's fantastic so far. I am not a fan of superhero films at all. Even critically respected ones like Guardians of the Galaxy felt like nauseating theme park attractions to me. This show is brutally violent and gory but also very well written and spends a lot of time on developing characters. Something that's usually done as shorthand and serves as the b-plot in most superhero fare. How does Daredevil compare to the other Marvel shows on ABC? Is this a new breed or have I been unfairly discriminating against shows like Agent Carter and S.H.I.E.L.D?

I found the first 9 episodes of Daredevil excellent, the back 4 are disappointingly slack in pace, the ending is
SpoilerShow
surprisingly tidy, and the red costume is ugly.

It's still vastly better than Agent Carter (which had a great pilot followed by seven dull episodes) and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (or at least better than the first half of the first season, after which I quit watching).

Agent Carter is a spy show rather than a superhero show. Its model is Alias, but it doesn't really have any of the wit or momentum of that show in its best days. It became a chore to watch. Haley Atwell is very charming and talented, but she didn't seem to be having much fun with her role after the first couple of episodes. I'd be very surprised if it returns to the schedule next year.

What little I saw of S.H.I.E.L.D. I just felt to be poorly cast and written and hamstrung by its simultaneous need to tie the loose ends of the Marvel Cinematic Universe together and inability to actually drive the story of the MCU. It may have gotten better (Wikipedia tells me it did), but what I saw just felt cheap and repetitive and unimportant. Then again, I never really cared about S.H.I.E.L.D. in comics form, either.

I don't plan to watch any further Marvel shows on ABC, but I will definitely tune in to A.K.A. Jessica Jones on Netflix. If nothing else, it's got a very charismatic and talented cast.

I bugged out on both SHIELD and Agent Carter, but got through Daredevil. I suspect the schizophrenic network schedules contributed to my bailing on the ABC shows as much as their hit-and-miss quality (SHIELD more misses; Carter more hits), but either way, that I was compelled to get all the way through Daredevil (despite its own misses) makes me want to call it the most interesting non-film thing Marvel Studios has produced. Plus, now I'm curious to see how the Netflix shows build on one another leading up to the Defenders mini-series.

D'Onofrio is really good and comes close to being totally unsettling in places (the 8th episode especially). I'd really like to see more of Scott Glenn's character next season.

Season 2 Teaser. Note: 3/4 of the video is all season 1 stuff.

That's a hell of a trailer.

I liked the first season and loved Jessica Jones. Of all the genres that television has bested the cineplex lately, I never thought superhero adaptations would be one of them.

It makes a little more sense if you consider these shows have less money to play with than their cinematic counterparts. The focus on characterization and more realistic stunts takes center stage over huge CGI spectacle. Even still, the Marvel brand (when not tethered to Fox or Sony it seems) does it's best to maintain quality and quantity from my vantage point.

4 episodes in. Bernthal is doing a hell of a job as The Punisher.

The 2nd season is pretty damn good. The addition of Frank Castle/The Punisher added a bit to give the stakes more depth. I'm not crazy about the way the Elektra character was portrayed, but it wasn't enough to dampen my excitement of the show. For me, the real MVP was Deborah Ann Woll, her character showing more ingenuity and only being vulnerable when needed.

while I liked how everything progressed this season my one big, infuriating complaint was the amount of fight scenes. It was like 1-3 per episode. 1 per episode is too much.

The big one in episode nine was a highlight of the season for me. But you're right, a lot of them seemed the same to me.

I'm three episodes in and am already enjoying it more than the first season. Bernthal is perfect if anything he's too likable.

The Punisher spin-off is greenlit, with Hannibal mainstay Steve Lightfoot on as show-runner. If he can subvert the "gun porn" expectations of this show the way his last one did for serial killer cliches, this will be one hell of a show.
