Francesco Rosi (b. 1922 - Naples, Italy)
Through emotions, images manage to portray
problems and human beings, as well as historical
moments and social occurrences. Thus, many a
time even the spectator who does not understand
what is being said in the film can nevertheless
understand what it is that the films wants to say.
And this is the great strength of cinema.

fyi. For me, the best Rosi, edging out Cadaveri eccellenti and Il caso Mattei, now available on DVD with, apparently, English subs:
Uomini contro

Re: Francesco Rosi
It's in an edition from Minerva Classics, and based on 2 Antonioni's from them (I Vinti & the portmanteau film L'Amore in Citta) should be a very decent release indeed with excellent Eng subs, and apparently some pages of the 28pp booklet also in English...

All the discs I have had from them have been great. Plus it's cheaper from their shop direct: Uomini contro.

Yes that's right, though in my experience they have stopped offering 'Best Offers' on their listings which was always a good way of getting about 20% off!

Francesco Rosi
So what’s the latest on restorations and releases of Il caso Mattei and Cadaveri eccellenti? Both have screenings at HOME, Manchester before the end of the year as part of their Euro Political Thrillers season and I wondered what to expect in terms of prints and restorations. I’ve seen both before on the hard-to-acquire DVDs and I know Mattei had a Scorsese restoration a few years ago, but I’ve not heard anything more recently about restorations leading to releases. Is there rights complications? I imagine both Criterion and Arrow, amongst others, would have interest in releasing them, so I presume there are complications?

Re: Francesco Rosi
Paramount is the stumbling block with The Mattei Affair; not sure what the complications are with the other one.

Re: Francesco Rosi
Both are among my favorites. I recall Carlotta's announcing a blu-ray of Il caso Mattei four, five [?] years ago. I periodically check for news. Nothing.

I read somewhere that there are rights issues with Cadaveri eccellenti? and not to expect it's release anytime soon.MichaelB wrote:Paramount is the stumbling block with The Mattei Affair; not sure what the complications are with the other one.

I own a nice-looking Italian DVD of Cadaveri that Capolavori put out in 2003. No subs.Aunt Peg wrote:I read somewhere that there are rights issues with Cadaveri eccellenti? and not to expect it's release anytime soon.
BUT, I now see that the 2016 Spanish release, Excelentísimos cadáveres, lists English as well as Spanish and Portuguese subs. Just ordered it.
No blu though. "Sad."
