So those worldwide rights Netflix supposedly acquired for The Irishman... turns out they may not have actually been available. Also the budget now stands at $125 mil and not just $100m, supposedly due in large part to the de-aging effects they plan to use for De Niro. Another party who might not be entirely happy about the Netflix deal: Martin Scorsese.

Apparently Scorsese once tried to make a film called DIRTY BOULEVARD with Johnny Depp as a character named Mambo, and it did indeed have some relationship with Lou Reed's 1989 album New York, which has a track of the same name on it.

This comes from various stories on Lou Reed's personal archive as it was announced today by the New York Public Library that their Performing Arts library will now be the archive's new home. The NY Times article includes a letter from Scorsese to Reed dated March 30, 1993. (The date alone should rule out that this was a promotional music video.)

Surprised by this, especially given how long it's been going on. Scorsese is indeed doing another Dylan documentary, this one focusing on the Rolling Thunder Revue.

In the Dissolve's 2013 interview with Ronnee Blakley, she brings up the 1975/1976 tour and says "a documentary is being made of it by Bob’s manager, and it’s said that [Martin] Scorsese is going to be pulling it together in the editing room."

Then last week, the Desert Sun (a USA Today paper) published an article on noted historian Douglas Brinkley, who's writing a book on that same tour, and he says:

"Martin Scorsese is doing a documentary right now on the Rolling Thunder Revue and I’ve been able to get copies of all of the interviews that have been done by the Scorsese team over the decades as a primary source for my book."

Argh, they're showing Black Narcissus! Man I wish I could catch that on a nitrate print.

Not sure where to put this (if mod has a better place....). An interesting podcast interview on screening nitrate films. Scorsese's Film Foundation involved.

As part of the Martin Scorsese exhibition in the Eye film institute in Amsterdam, this weekend saw the 4K presentation of a new 'restoration' of The Age of Innocence. With an introduction by Grover Crisp from Sony, who explained the six-month-process, based on the OCN, it took to get it to Scorsese's liking.

Needless to say, the picture looked absolutely stunning!

I think this restoration has been around for a while now since they screened it at NYFF in 2013 and was even released on Blu-Ray in Italy in 2014.

Caps-a-holic

Not sure why there as been such a delay for its release in Region A. I also wonder if Sony will put it out themselves (in the fashion of Taxi Driver) or let Criterion handle it.

What a wonderful idea! That was - and still is - one of my very favorite television shows of all time. There are few things more inspired than the sketch of Mel's Rock Pile with the Queen Haters.

...or Rick Moranis. Would have been nice to have him coaxed out of retirement for this.

I was aware of that, which made me hopeful he would appear on the reunion show until I saw the cast list.

I wonder if this means Netflix has acquired the rights to the show.

I’ll be at the Elgin on Sunday, so I’ll try and post how absolutely amazing I know it’s going to be that evening.

Don't forget that the late composer Elmer Bernstein wrote and recorded a score for "Gangs of New York," only to have it rejected by the producers (those who were lucky enough to attend an early screening of Gangs a year before it came out had the pleasure of hearing it as it hasn't received a CD release). I bet Bernstein's music would've been the glue that would've held this film together (more so than the songs, as well as Howard Shore's two or three pieces from his concert hall composition "New York Symphony" {which resembles Holst's The Planets from what I can recall}). It's sad that Bernstein had one of his final scores rejected, and I'm sure an old fashioned orchestral score is exactly what this film needed.

Dylan
Just saw this. I actually met someone late last year who was involved with the film. Won't say his name, but I brought this up and I was told Scorsese simply wanted a different score because Bernstein couldn't quite get to where Scorsese wanted to be with the music. So nothing underhanded, no Weinstein meddling (at least on this issue), Scorsese did decide for himself that he wanted something different.

What a great read. He could easily live another 15 years and maybe more, but when that comes he will be sorely missed. I can’t think of anyone who has given more to the movie industry and the art and lifeline of film then him. Very few Hollywood directors have been active in their later years, let alone as prolific as Scorsese. It reminds me of a Q&A of Kundun I attended at it’s release time. He was taking questions from the audience, which were industry people. It was a DGA event. An older gentleman asked him, “wasn’t it hard and difficult for you at your age.” Scorsese looked incredulous at the man, answered his almost insulting question with “no, that’s what I do.”

Clearly his Italian American Catholic upbringing (I can relate) helps put into a sort of focus and meaning to what his life is and was and will be when mortality is around the corner. And by the way, nothing wrong with that.

I don’t love everything he’s done but I respect the shit out of all he’s done.
