I haven't participated yet, but I did manage to save Tristan's initial outline:
We're going to have top 50s. You are welcome to pass on a decade you don't feel like you've seen enough to try... Hopefully not everybody will leave it until the last minute. Here are the rules:

1. 50 films, ranked from 1 to 50, no ties. The list must go to 50. The film ranked #1 will get 50 points, #2 will get 49, down to #50 which get 1 point.

2. To make the final list, a film must be mentioned on two different lists.

3. For "controversial" years (made at the end or beginning of a decade) please use IMDb.

4. Serials will be counted as one film. Films like Ivan the Terrible and Die Niebelungen will be considered one film. Trilogies such as the Apu Trilogy, the Godfather trilogy, and the Three Colors trilogy will be counted as three different films, and must be separated as such. Any other questions should be sent to [Matt], and [Matt] will reply. (Tristan originally requested that questions be sent to him, but since Matt is taking over I substitued his name).

5. Short films are allowed.

6. The silent era is 1895-1929. Such films as I Was Born But... that are silent but made in the 30s will be saved for the 30s list. The Jazz Singer was made in 1928, but was a sound film, but is allowed in the silent era list.

Approximately 2/3 Hollywood films. The legacy of the war, I guess.

Criterion titles that failed to make the cut for this list:

31 Great Expectations
32 Oliver Twist
41 Henry V
78 the Bank Dick
82 Hamlet
273 Theves' Highway

also, no L'ecole des facteus (Tati's short from the Mon Oncle disc) or Blood of the Beasts (Franju's from Eyes Without a Face)

Admission: There are still 19 of the 88 I haven't gotten around to watching (and 16 that I've had the pleasure to watch on celluloid in a cinema setting). And quite a few one-vote-getters Matt listed that I've never seen either. I do regret not picking Grapes of Wrath. Somehow it slipped my mind. I always like it when a consensus list can make me aware of titles I was previously "oblivious" to. The Silents list did this, the 30's list didn't, but in this case I'm now glad to be made aware of Women of the Night and Prison. Hopefully I can get a chance to see them someday.

I predict an even more splintered vote for the 1950's list, whenever that happens. Hopefully with more participation it won't mean as many "empty slots" (though 88 is a nice number too).

In fact, Sunset Blvd is the #3 on my '50s list I just submitted to Matt. Simply because I think it's one of the greatest films but that doesn't mean that I love it or it's among my faves.
I respect your opinion on Sunset Blvd, but I find it disappointing that you chose to not reflect that in your ranking of films. I personally like the film and ranked it #14 on my list. Seems to me that your list should reflect your personal faves, not a consensus.
Can we get some clarification here, because I also understood that the lists were to reflect our personal favorites. The final results might be really off-balance if some submitted lists that "reflect consensus" and others that reflect their own quirky loves.

denti alligator, let me clarify my choice of Sunset Blvd if I could...

I chose this film mainly for a personal reason. It's a powerful influence on my top favorite filmmakers - Fassbinder, Lynch and Almodovar to name a few. I read tons of interviews and those artists consisently speak incredibly high of Sunset Blvd and its creator Billy Wilder.

Sunset Blvd certainly paves the path to a great number of my favorite films (for instance, Veronika Voss is the best example and it's currently on my top ten films of all time. I think it's superior to Sunset Blvd but I would hate to insult the original by not giving it the credit and respect it ultimately deserves). No I didn't choose this film because of its legacy.. not because its simply a classic...It's mainly because without this film, I wouldn't have my favorite films. It just feels right to me to make that choice. It is personal. Plus I adore crazy old women and Norma Desmond is the cinematic icon of them all. For some reason, of the entire film, one particular camera shot stays with me - it is when the camera swoops through the white curtains into Holden's office in the beginning. It is beautifully done.

Vertigo and All About Eve are above Sunset Blvd on my list for the similar reasons. My favorite '50s film is Auntie Mame - the one that I can watch every day! - and I don't have the guts to place it above those films but it's still on my list.

So my respect for Sunset Blvd is enormous and I figured that it deserves a very high ranking on my list. Sorry if my choice causes this whole thing illogical, ridiculous, confusing....

Before anyone even asks, your 1960s lists will be due at the end of April.

Here is a refresher on the rules plus a couple of new ones to make tabulation easier:

1. You may list up to 50 films, ranked from 1 to 50, no ties. The film ranked #1 will get 50 points, #2 will get 49, down to #50 which get 1 point.

2. To make the final list, a film must be mentioned on two different lists.

3. For date info, IMDb will be the standard (even if it's incorrect).

4. Serials will be counted as one film. Films like Ivan the Terrible and Die Niebelungen will be considered one film. Trilogies such as the Apu Trilogy, the Godfather trilogy, and the Three Colors trilogy will be counted as three different films, and must be separated as such. Any other questions should be sent to Tristan (auteur52@gmail.com).

5. Short films are allowed.

6. You must submit titles in their standard English titles whenever possible. That means Wild Strawberries, not Smultronstället; Seven Samurai, not Shichinin no samurai. Lists requiring a significant amount of translation will not be counted. If a film goes by variant titles (ex: The Naked Night, Sawdust and Tinsel, Sunset of a Clown), it's best to include them all if you can.

7. Please submit titles in one of two forms: title only or title followed by director, then date, in parentheses. Example: Persona (Bergman, 1966).

Strange that Breathless and The River were so far down the list. And Rashomon and Seven Samurai both in the top 10? Kind of odd. 60s might be interesting. Thanks for putting this together Matt. Any unlisted surprises?

Breathless is from 1960 not 1959 according to IMDB, that's why I didn't include it in my list, and I guess that's why it's so far down on the list...but could well may be higher in the 60's one.

Thanks Matt.

I wish I could say this was an interesting list, but it seems pretty canonical to me (but then an awful lot of these films were on my list!) There's also a clear DVD availability bias, so it will be interesting to see how this changes when / if we revisit it in the future. Hopefully by then we'll have a decent release of Man of the West that will see it head way up the list. And I'm sure Ugetsu would have made the top ten had it been a Criterion by now.

I'm kicking myself that I forgot about Duck Amuck, and am very pleased to see it made the list.

Breathless is a 1960 film (1960, for me, was one of the greatest years for film in its history...we also had "L' Avventura," "La Dolce Vita," "Shoot the Piano Player," "Rocco and His Brothers," "Psycho," "The Apartment," etc.).

And I guess I'm late for submitting my list. I'll definitely contribute to the 60's one.

Michael, I wish you had put it at the top of your list. Auntie Mame just barely squeaked in with 83 points at #99.

I personally put Vertigo at #50 because I knew it would rank at the top regardless, but I wish I hadn't ranked it at all. Part of my interest in putting these lists together is seeing if something unexpected will jump onto the list. Sadly, there is an aknowledged canon that seems to have shaped the 50's list. I would have loved for some of things I voted for to have made it on like Stan Brakhage's early work, Roger Corman's A Bucket of Blood, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers or The Blob.

I'm also surprised that Ashes and Diamonds scored so low. I personally think it was one of the most important films of the 50's, paving the way for the French New Wave. Maybe the DVD release issue is at fault, but to its credit, it is on DVD albeit not in a very good version.

In closing, I was (roughly) responsible for:

1/5 of the points credited to In A Lonely Place
1/4 of Written On The Wind
1/4 of Shadows
Almost 1/3 of Steel Helmet
Almost 1/2 of Lola Montes
and
1/870 of Vertigo

Well, Auntie Mame is #8 on my list. That's still pretty high.

I'm also surprised to see Suddenly, Last Summer way at the bottom! Katharine Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor together in one of the most messed up films ever. My favorite Tennessee Williams adaptation.

it seems pretty canonical to me
Yah. I've seen all but one of these 100. So there's little to add to my "to see" list. Too bad. I suspect that the more people we canvass and the more diverse the pool of possible films (as we move towards the 90s) the more canonical the lists will become. We'll see. Thanks, as always for the compilation.

FYI, some of my faves that didn't make the cut:

Sirk, There's Always Tomorrow and Magnificent Obsession (both more fun for me than, say, Written on the Wind or Tarnished Angels).
Borowczyk, "Les astronautes" (a little animated experimental film)
Reed, A Man Between (nice thriller)
Chukhrai, Ballad of a Soldier (surprised this didn't make it)
Bergman, Evening of the Jesters (which I prefer to all those Strawberries, Smiles, and Seals)
Ophuls, La ronde (maybe not up to Earrings standards, but I prefer it to Lola)

All of which, too, are pretty canonical.

When I ended up with 51 films I dropped Vertigo (from number 40-something) for the same reason (and because it's a film I admire more than love). Maybe we should have conferred on our Brakhage choices (I went for Window Water Baby Moving) in order to rig the list? :) Dog Star Man will be on my 60s list!

Ok, you're absolved.

I'm sure Matt is sleeping off his long weekend of compilation, but I'd be really interested in knowing what just missed the cut.

I'd be excited to get to see a list as well of all of the titles that were only chosen by one person. Obviously, it would probably be a long list, but I'd be very interested in all of the little curios that people allowed themselves to vote for. I'd probably be even more interested in that list than this one.

With the Breathless correction, two more of my picks just made the list. It should be a 5-way tie, though, because they got 83 points like Ashes and Diamonds and Auntie M.
I'm surprised that nothing by Ichikawa (e.g. Burmese Harp) or Kobayashi (e.g. Human Condition 1 & 2) made the list. As others have said, if their films were more available on DVD I would hope it would improve the valuation of those films.
Hrossa, I was with you on early Brakhage; I voted for Wedlock House: An Intercourse.

Then everyone else in the poll must've had Vertigo in the top 5, 'cuz I had it at 37. If I'd been as strategic in my voting as y'all were, Tokyo Story might've been number 1. Though, now that I think of it, I had Tokyo Story at 38! (my fifth favorite of the 50s Ozus!)

Damn, we must have all just voted for different Brakhages! ! I cast my votes in favor of Desistfilm and Cat's Cradle. How did we all manage to vote for different 1950's Brakhages?! There are only so many we could have seen. I had both of mine in my top 20, too.

Dog Star Man will likely be in my top ten for the 60's. As will The Beast of Yucca Flats in all likelihood.

It's good to see Tarnished Angels come in at #100 even though I haven't seen it yet.

My vote for Curse of the Demon counted for Night of the Demon, I hope (not that even that vote would bring it into the top 100.

So I'm the only one who voted for Plan 9 From OUter Space

Wow, thanks Matt!

So, Desistfilm was pretty close after all.

I'm (pleasantly) surprised that Indian Tomb/The Tiger of Eschnapur and Music Room got more than a vote apiece. Also the Kenneth Anger film.

I think the DVD release issue really hurt Tashlin in the end. I'm glad somebody out there has managed to see Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? and Artists and Models. I'm still waiting for my chance.

I didn't even realize Plan 9 (1959) qualified as a 50's film.

Ouch! That list of runners-up contained several more films I'd overlooked. Most annoying is Salt of the Earth, which probably would have made the list if I hadn't been so stupid. And who, I wonder, is the other fan of Eaux d'artifice?

I'd also like to register my amazement that The Sweet Smell of Success didn't make the top 100 - it wasn't until I saw it on this list that I realised it wasn't on the first one!

That would be me.

I agree with what's been said about the final list reflecting the existing canon rather than doing much to push it. And I can't complain, since I voted for the likes of the Searchers, Ugetsu and six of the top ten films.

Glad that titles like Bigger Than Life, a Movie and the Bunuels made it.

Criterion titles not among the top 102:

7 a Night to Remember
14-16 Samurai Trilogy
22 Summertime
48 Black Orpheus
77 And God Created Woman
81 Variety Lights
91 The Blob
92 Fiend Without a Face
113 Big Deal on Madonna Street
148 Ballad of a Soldier
154 the Horse's Mouth
189 the White Sheik
202 Indiscretion of an American Wife / Terminal Station
213 Richard III
243 French Cancan
244 Elena and Her Men
246 I Vitelloni
270 Casque d'or
271 Touchez pas au grisbi
274 Night and the City
283 a Generation
284 Kanal

as well as any short films (other than Night and Fog). Such as the Stan Brakhage films Desistfilm, Wedlock House: an Intercourse and Cat's Cradle.

Well, I had 80% of Yang Kwei Fei but only 16% of The Steel Helmet. I had five films on my list that no-one else had:

The Naked Night
Silver Lode
People Will Talk
The Racket
The Big Knife
