Mise En Scene wrote:What action films, if any, were you folks considering? (I'm not inquiring into which ones made your lists so as to keep the suspense on what, if any, makes the final compiled list.) So which ones may or may not have made your lists?

Titles I was seriously considering - Ronin, Running Out of Time, Fist of Legend, Drunken Master 2, Once Upon a Time in China, Once Upon a Time in China 2, Dragon Inn, Lifeline.

Any great ones I overlooked, forgot about, or never heard of?
Hard Boiled was on my list. For me, it's even better than Woo's usually praised The Killer and one of the best Hong Kong action pictures.

What action films, if any, were you folks considering?
Well, I couldn't not fit in my beloved Nic Cage trilogy: The Rock, Face/Off, and Con Air.

I'm glad to see One False Move on someone's list. I opted for Franklin's Devil in a Blue Dress instead, but both are generally underrated it seems.

Devil in a Blue Dress was another bubbling under for me, but Carl Franklin's commentary is in my Top 50 commentaries

Unfortunately, I didn't get to see Raise the Red Lantern in time for this. I still have it to watch. Never mind, the point is that your recommendation caused me to get it and give it a try, which is more important than lists.

I must admit I've seen very few films of the 2000s, but one I really like is Terry Zwigoff's Ghost World for what it's worth.

OK, the polls are officially closed.

I've got one last submission to add and then have to format the list, so it'll be coming along in an hour or two.

I printed out the penultimate hundred last night and it's pretty diverse and impressive: a much better accounting of the decade than our last attempt (which to me looked a bit like Empire's attempt at "The 100 Coolest Movies of the 90s").

It's Brobdignagian. 55 lists were received, which means that the threshold for inclusion in the final 100 is up towards 200 points. So everything on the list has considerable support, or putting it another way, even if a film was fanatically supported by four different contributors, it still wouldn't have made it. As a consequence, instead of the usual pattern of obvious choices at the top and obscure ones towards the bottom, there's more of a marbling throughout the list. I'll also deal with the also-rans differently this time around, since there are literally hundreds and hundreds of them.

The film that dominated all the way ended up on top, but number two was playing leapfrog with it in the final stages and ended up within one submission's striking distance of it (as did number three, to my great surprise). As tribute to the resourcefulness of contributors and the relentlessness of local advocates, for the first time we've ended up with a film in the top ten that isn't available anywhere on DVD. (And that's not the only swapsie triumphant in the top 20).

Enough teases. Next post will be the real thing.

Some stats:

Directors

Jarmusch might have topped the charts, but his other films from the decade didn’t get much love, so the real winners this time around were Wong, Kiarostami, Kieslowski and the Coens. David Lynch came next, but much lower down, along with Scorsese.

Wong Kar-wai – 2524 points (5 films, all but Ashes of Time making the top 100)
Abbas Kiarostami – 2035 points (5 films, all but Through the Olive Trees making the top 100)
Krzysztof Kieslowski – 1978 points (4 films, but Three Colours: White was the real runt of the litter, gaining only 76 points)
The Coen Brothers – 1912 points (5 films, only The Hudsucker Proxy missing out)
David Lynch – 1384 points (6 films)
Martin Scorsese – 1247 points (7 films)

The filmmakers with the greatest number of films nominated were Stan Brakhage (13) and Manoel de Oliveira (9), but most of those were down to a single list in each case!

Intensity Ratings

Satantango and A Brighter Summer Day were the films with the most passionate supporters, both making the top ten despite appearing on fewer than half the lists (23 for the Tarr, 19 for the Yang), and both having an average placing of number 15. A Brighter Summer Day ranked at number one on the greatest number of lists (4, plus another four second placings). Happy Together and Three Colours: Red were the only top ten films not to top any individual list.

Perhaps even more so than when Obama won the election, I feel like I was a part of something very important today.

Disappointed though that Happiness did not quite make the top 100. As punishment, you must all go watch it now.

I am floored that Eyes Wide Shut made the top five. I am as much of a Kubrickian as the average poster here, but wow, that one seems pretty hard to justify.

I am relieved that Kieslowski's three masterpieces finished where they did.
