Just for fun, here is an expected top 50 based on votes made in the dynamic top 10 threads for each year (caveat: years where more people contributed lists or where the quality threshold was lower are overly represented). I'll include a statistic when I post the results tomorrow that compares against this:

01. The Grand Budapest Hotel (Wes Anderson, 2014)
02. Boyhood (Richard Linklater, 2014)
03. Moonrise Kingdom (Wes Anderson, 2012)
04. Melancholia (Lars von Trier, 2011)
05. The Tree of Life (Terrence Malick, 2011)
06. The Master (Paul Thomas Anderson, 2012)
07. The Turin Horse (Béla Tarr & Ágnes Hranitzky, 2011)
08. Inside Llewyn Davis (Joel & Ethan Coen, 2013)
09. The Wolf of Wall Street (Martin Scorsese, 2013)
10. Under the Skin (Jonathan Glazer, 2013)
11. Her (Spike Jonze, 2013)
12. Gravity (Alfonso Cuarón, 2013)
13. Drive (Nicolas Winding Refn, 2011)
14. A Separation (Asghar Farhadi, 2011)
15. Inherent Vice (Paul Thomas Anderson, 2014)
16. Upstream Color (Shane Carruth, 2013)
17. Certified Copy (Abbas Kiarostami, 2010)
18. Holy Motors (Leos Carax, 2012)
19. Whiplash (Damien Chazelle, 2014)
20. Before Midnight (Richard Linklater, 2013)
21. The Social Network (David Fincher, 2010)
22. Blue Is the Warmest Color (Abdellatif Kechiche, 2013)
23. 12 Years a Slave (Steve McQueen, 2013)
24. Frances Ha (Noah Baumbach, 2012)
25. Margaret (Kenneth Lonergan, 2011)
26. Birdman (Alejandro González Iñárritu, 2014)
27. Spring Breakers (Harmony Korine, 2012)
28. Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (Apichatpong Weerasethakul, 2010)
29. Mysteries of Lisbon (Raúl Ruiz, 2010)
30. Black Swan (Darren Aronofsky, 2010)
31. Only Lovers Left Alive (Jim Jarmusch, 2013)
32. Leviathan (Lucien Castaing-Taylor & Véréna Paravel, 2012)
33. Django Unchained (Quentin Tarantino, 2012)
34. Nightcrawler (Dan Gilroy, 2014)
35. Tabu (Miguel Gomes, 2012)
36. Goodbye to Language (Jean-Luc Godard, 2014)
37. Hugo (Martin Scorsese, 2011)
38. Jauja (Lisandro Alonso, 2014)
39. Gone Girl (David Fincher, 2014)
40. Interstellar (Christopher Nolan, 2014)
41. Meek's Cutoff (Kelly Reichardt, 2010)
42. True Grit (Joel & Ethan Coen, 2010)
43. Ida (Paweł Pawlikowski, 2013)
44. The Act of Killing (Joshua Oppenheimer, 2012)
45. Carlos (Olivier Assayas, 2010)
46. It Follows (David Robert Mitchell, 2014)
47. The Grandmaster (Wong Kar-wai, 2013)
48. A Touch of Sin (Jia Zhang-ke, 2013)
49. Amour (Michael Haneke, 2012)
50. Nebraska (Alexander Payne, 2013)

Just to give an idea of how much things can differ when you're polling different people, here is another clue: There are only two films that have received multiple #1 votes, and one of them is not even listed above!

This is fun indeed. I actually thought that the list I handed in would be terribly 'mainstream' for the most part, but now seeing this Dynamic Top Tens list it seems I'm pretty much on the fringes again... :-) Oh well.

The Rasoulof film, Manuscripts Don't Burn, which has been heavily mentioned here, is currently available on Amazon Prime Video UK in HD. I don't believe the film got a Blu-ray release anywhere, which is why this is worth mentioning.

If I can make one last-minute push for a film I did not see often mentioned in the 2010-2014 annual lists, it is Herzog's Happy People: A Year in the Taiga, which I believe is available via Netflix. One of my favorite documentaries from the last ten years.

There are a couple films that I could not fit into my ballot which I'd like to shout out here: Like Someone in Love, Kiarostami's much more interesting feature of the decade, and Pineiro's Viola, a hugely dense work and very regrettable omission. Also trying to pick which Hong film would make the cut was agonizing, especially since (imo) his greatest, Right Now, Wrong Then, isn't eligible.

2010-2014 List Discussion and Suggestions

#206 Post by movielocke » Mon May 30, 2016 11:40 pm

edit looks like I can't read the difference between quote and PM!

the last changes I made was swapping out "Much Ado About Nothing" for "Easy A" and "Inequality for All" for "Cave of Forgotten Dreams", so I guess that makes the Whedon and Reich films my runners up. Interestingly, when I initially assembled the list, "Moonrise Kingdom," "Grand Budapest Hotel" and "Inside Llewyn Davis" all wound up just outside the top twenty five, and I swapped various ones in and out until my final list actually wound up with all of them also runners up--as they were initially--just outside the top twenty-five.

I reckon we can all start bitching about how the list both contained no surprises and was outrageously wrong even without the list being posted yet!

I went back over my entries for the 2010-14 lists when I was compiling this and was surprised that the list of 25 I submitted didn't reflect them at all. I didn't rewatch anything for this poll but some of the films that scored really high in my end of year lists didn't even make it. I made completely subjective judgements when compiling this list but I'm pretty sure Tree of Life topped my list in 2011 and didn't even get a vote from me this time.

It's my fault that the final list hasn't been posted yet. I thought the deadline was the end of the month, i.e. tomorrow, and swo prompted me about my no show. Thankfully, I could copy and paste it together in several minutes from the Dynamic Top Tens.

Odder still was the fact that three US horror films make the list plus a very dark indie film.

Thanks to everyone for your participation this round. I'll be releasing the results shortly in the next three posts. Below is a guide to what the figures listed after each film represent, each separated with a slash mark:

1. Total points (25 for each #1 placement, 24 for each #2, etc.)
2. Number of lists the film appeared on (out of 27 submitted). If the film appeared in anyone's top 5, the number of top 5 appearances is also denoted in parentheses.
3. Highest placement of the film on any one list. If more than one person ranked the film this high, this is also denoted in parentheses.
4. How much better or worse the film fared here than might have been expected based on the votes in the dynamic top 10 threads, with differences of 10 or more highlighted.

So for example, the 124/8(2)/1(x2)/+8 shown for Holy Motors means that it scored 124 points and appeared on eight lists (and two top 5s), with two people ranking it as high as #1. The film also placed eight positions higher than expected based on votes in the dynamic top 10 threads.

For the list of orphans, only figure #3 is displayed (the highest rank, not the score given).

Feel free to continue discussion in this thread regarding the results of this project and to share your individual lists (including defenses of your poor-faring favorites). The grand finale of this round of the lists project is coming up next, in which all of the best performing films from 1895-2014 will duel to the death, oh wait this is art everyone wins. I will start that thread sometime before the end of time. Possibly even this week.

That's about right--most whole decades have about 50-60 films.

Interesting results, thanks as always swo! Looking at the Orphans list, man, I feel for so many of you, I would gladly have voted for so many of these but 25 votes only go so far!

On my list:

25. (tie) Phoenix (Christian Petzold, 2014) 80/5/8/+28
27. (tie) Enemy (Denis Villeneuve, 2013) 76/4(2)/4/+56
46. Nightcrawler (Dan Gilroy, 2014) 52/4(1)/3/-12
(tie) Another Earth (Mike Cahill, 2011) 52/6(1)/4/+19

A decent enough haul. I don't know when I became such a Jake Gyllenhaal fan. I reckon I could've voted for Prisoners too.

Thanks a lot for the hard work, as always, swo!

I'm pleased to see that about half of my films made the final list, and that I only have five orphans, among which is "Clouds of Sils Maria", which surprises me given that it's available from CC and has been healthily discussed. Not that it's among my absolute favourite films of these five years, but I still thought it would receive more praise (even though I was initially critical about it at first too, it stuck in my head, which is always a good sign).

The bigger surprise for me is that only two people voted for "Hard to be a God", a film that has also received quite a bit of discussion here and has a widely praised Arrow release. Too hard stuff for most people? ;)

Films from my list that didn't make the top 50:

06. Django Unchained (also-ran)
07. Foxcatcher (also-ran)
11. Beyond the Lights (also-ran) (pleasantly surprised it made it onto another list!)
13. Love & Mercy (also-ran)
18. Interstellar (also-ran)
21. Take Shelter (also-ran)
24. Stoker (also-ran)

Not sure what it says about me that I had zero orphans. I'm a real man of the people.
