Several more lists now tallied and we already have our top 100! As a reminder, you have six more days left to either send me your list or revise what you previously submitted. A couple more hints:

1. The titles of two films in the top 100 might be confused if you translate them both into a different language.

2. As far as I can tell, two films in the current top 50 didn't receive a single vote last time.

Another list in, another clue: We now have two films tied for 10th place which are both by the same director. (I have not given a clue about these films or this director before.)

A few more lists are in, and assuming that about half of you are waiting until the last minute to submit, it looks like we're back on track to having 30+ participants this round. Maybe my clues are helping? Here's another one: One release year appears to be the resounding forum favorite, with four of the top six spots having come out then.

2000s List Discussion and Suggestions

#205 Post by movielocke » Thu Jan 28, 2016 2:22 am

I'll have to send In a revised list as I thought of two films found in the early days of green cine that I recently remembered discovering back then.

Failan, is a quiet, beautifully acted, South Korean immigrant story, the titular character is an immigrant into the country and crosses paths via an arranged marriage (but no actual contact between spouses) with an on the outs gangster in a way that changes both their lives, I distinctly remember an abrupt structural shift halfway through the film that really turned it into something, or at least so I remember.

Lies, (gojitmal) is about a school girl who is afraid of all the raping going around, so she decides to be proactive and start an affair with an older man that rapidly descends into sadomasochism. Naturally it's about lies to oneself, to others, lies society tells given the title. I'd never seen in the realm of the senses, a clear influence, at the time, but the film has stuck in my brain in the way haneke films do.

Jang Sun-woo was quite a big deal back in the late nineties (Tony Rayns even made a documentary about him), but I'm afraid I never saw much in his work beyond obvious attention-getting transgression (and Timeless, Bottomless Bad Movie was the big deal in that regard - though Lies does feature the protagonists eating each other's shit!). Then he dropped off the edge of the world, both critically and professionally. Unfortunately for the purposes of this project, Lies is a 1999 film. His only film this century is Resurrection of the Little Match Girl (which I haven't seen).

Failan is indeed very good, but it did not make my list (despite the fact that Korean films probably made up the biggest chunk of my list). The two lead performers are both excellent, and the story heartbreaking
SpoilerShow
(though I wonder if it does not, in fact, have an ultimately _happy_ ending, albeit a la Grave of the Fireflies-style happy, i.e. posthumously happy).

When I was ready with my list, I realised again what a great decade for film this was. One of the most fascinating.

Yikes. I thought this would be easy & could just throw it together in an hour. I remembered the 2000s as being the decade that world cinema went down the tubes for me (a decade following the decline in the quality of US films), however I went to imdb & it looks like I'll only be able to include 1/2 of the "9" ratings I gave out during the decade to fill out 50 spots. Looks like it wasn't so bad after all. I've decided to exclude all shorts to make it easier & am contemplating weeding out as many documentaries & tv series (as there are many more to include for this decade for me & I don't want my list being a rehash of the documentary list).

Well TV series are ineligible so don't vote for any of those, but please don't leave off shorts & docs purely because they don't conform to the traditional narrative format. That makes the shorts and the docs sad. Just vote for your favorites, whatever they may be.

For example, here is a pretty good short I'd never heard of before that I'm glad someone included on their list.

Guess I read over #2 too quickly, so only miniseries & a single episode from a series, which makes it easy to exclude all tv & make it a bit easier, but I'll still only get to about 1/2 of my "9"s.

Single episode from an anthology series, yes, i.e. a show whose individual episodes might each be thought of as separate films.

I thought one of the fascinating aspects of 21st C filmdom has been the resurgence of documentary feature films. I had 9 docs on my 2000's list, another 2 that could have made the list, plus the mockumentary My Winnipeg, and the recreation of actual events in Road to Guantanamo.

It was also a good era for animation, though I wound up with only 5 on my list.

I had 28 foreign films on my list (and a film like Born into Brothels sure seems like a foreign film, though made by Indian Americans). But nearly half of those (12 films) was comprised of films from Canada (mostly due to Maddin) and other English speaking countries (UK, AUS)
So just 1/3 of my list (16/50) were foreign language films. A somewhat low amount probably attributable to my lack of fondness for 21st C Asian cinema.

26 lists in now and the aggregate list is looking...kind of weird. Like a fourth of this list was nowhere near making the last one, and of course, old favorites have had to move out of the way to make room. If the sound of this alarms you, I am still accepting lists throughout the night. I'll be posting results tomorrow morning including anything else that I have received by the time I wake up.

i went back through the bottom part of my list and my runners up and "failan" wound up slotting in at 52, so no need to update my list, as I'm reasonably happy with it overall, I've tweaked the order a few times on letterboxed but nothing major. And I really wanted to include "dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog" more than I wanted to include Failan, and the former was probably the only one I was willing to bump.

***
I finally watched "mulhullond dr" for this list. I'm a little sad to have watched it, as it's pretty much the only movie, for the past fifteen years to elicit complete shock from people in real life when they found out I hadn't seen it. Really good movie, loved the ambiguity, felt like it was a little bit of a cop out to push it the extreme of David Lynch Chanting "I know something you don't know," over and over again during the end credits, but hey, good for him. ;) (that's a joke). What I liked most is that it is a movie with no correct interpretation whatsoever, so as an audience member, I feel free to project whatever I want to on to the movie to interpret it according to my own narrative desires (and or desires for narrative). So if I want the movie to have a wormhole it has a wormhole, if I want the movie to have a fight club squared function, it can, if I want the movie to be a simple commentary on the nature of performance/roles and actressing, it can be so, if I want it be a dream of a dreamer having a dream of people dreaming a dream of a dreamer having a dream of a dreamer it totally can! I really enjoyed the film, not top fifty, not on a first viewing, but I could see it making a future list with more time for its tentacles to eat their way into my skull.

The other film accompanying mulhullond dr, inevitably in the top two of tomorrow's unveiled list, "in the mood for love" also isn't on my list. I'll be completely honest why. I bought the criterion dvd the day it was released on reputation alone. I watched it that night, and fell asleep, granted I was pretty young, but still, shameful. The next day and feeling self conscious and stupid, I bragged online about how great it was and how much I loved it and thought it was amazing, then I finished watching the film later that next night. Eventually feeling guilty about this I re watched it a couple months later and fell asleep again. Mad at myself for this reaction the film wound up sitting on my shelf for the next ten years, until I decided to sell it in a spring cleaning of my dvd collection.

First, I re watched it though, it is an excellent film, but not one I personally loved, and the only strong connection I felt to the film was lingering regret about not being able to connect to the film the "right" way--the way all the other film people online seemed to so passionately adore it with no reservations. I never got that experience from the film, so I sold it and moved on. Sort of the film that got away for me. So it's not on my list either.

Thanks to everyone for your participation this round. I'll be releasing the results shortly in the next three posts. Here again is a guide to what the figures listed after each film represent, each separated with a slash mark:

1. Total points (50 for each #1 placement, 49 for each #2, etc.)
2. Number of lists the film appeared on (out of 28 submitted). If the film appeared in anyone's top 10, the number of top 10 appearances is also denoted in parentheses.
3. Highest placement of the film on any one list. If more than one person ranked the film this high, this is also denoted in parentheses.
4. Change in position from the 2010 list, with movements of 10 or more highlighted.

So for example, the 385/10(5)/1(x3)/-3 shown for Werckmeister Harmonies means that it scored 385 points and appeared on ten lists (and five top 10s), with three people ranking it as high as #1. The film also moved down three positions from its placement on the 2010 list.

For the list of orphans, only figure #3 is displayed (the highest rank, not the score given).

If anyone would like me to PM them a list of how all of their picks fared in the overall tally (rather than having to scour through all of the results) it's a simple thing for me to do. Just let me know.

I'll unlock the 2010-2014 thread in the next little while. In the meantime, feel free to continue discussion in this thread regarding the results of the 2000s project and to share your individual lists (including defenses of your poor-faring favorites).

Clue Answer Key
SpoilerShow
von Trier
Police, adj.
The Son/The Sun
Melody for a Street Organ/The White Meadows
Tsai
2000
A couple more potentially interesting statistics: Eternal Sunshine appeared on only 2 of the first 15 lists submitted but on all but one of the last 10. Also, About Elly appeared on none of the first 26 lists submitted, but then was in the top 10 of the final two lists, nearly placing it in the top 100.

Great job.
Thanks.
Would've taken me a month to compile all that!

Looks like docs and animation didn't do that well.

Very pleased to see Zodiac place so high as it probably would've topped my list if I submitted to these things. Thanks for compiling, swo!
