We got 20 lists for the animation project, so that trophy is still in contention.

Sorry I wasn't clear, I meant that we got fifteen ballots at all is a victory, not that it's the number one genre project in terms of participation. Animation ain't either, the crown belongs to Horror and will in all likelihood only be matched or topped by the second round of Horror in a couple years

Ballots will be due by Midnight EST tomorrow (Dec 30th). Starting in the morning tomorrow, I will accept no substitutions or changes on already-submitted lists

Oh, and hints. Y'all like hints. Previous unanimous winner is no longer our number one, bested by another European classic. As of my preliminary estimate the next three slots in the top five all go to American films. Two of these top five films are part of the Criterion Collection. All five films are available on English-friendly Blu-rays.

I have a provisional list of 40+ films.
Let me tidy it up, add some titles from the war DVDs I watched a few years back, and I should get a list in in the next few hours.

Edit: And Then I Sentenced Them All To Death (Romania) will be probably be my #51 sight-unseen, based on the title alone ...

Submitted a list and already thought of a great war film I left off -- The Manchurian Candidate ...

I really had a tough time providing an order beyond the Top 20.
Some films I like a lot but they were more tangential to war themes than others I might like slightly less. Plus it just seemed hard to compare the variety of films on my list.

Okay, just to be safe, I will extend the deadline by ~12 hours from now in case anyone intended to submit a list during the error-fest this evening. Any new list must be received by 3PM EST today, 12/31

Voting closed with a respectable eighteen lists submitted. I'm sick in bed for New Year's Eve, but that means I have time to tally, so the results will be up sometime today

Thanks for all your hard work! In the end, it looks like I called the #1 pick with my first guess. Sorry to whoever else voted for Senso, which was the last film to drop from my list.

It was originally Went the Day Well? though! And second clue was Grand Illusion, Went the Day Well, the Best Years of Our Lives, Apocalypse Now, and To Be Or Not To Be. Algiers came strong out of nowhere in the last couple lists to win it all

It's always fascinating trying to figure out which my orphans landed there because nobody else likes them much (The Empire Strikes Back), which are because others don't think they're war movies (The Passion of Joan of Arc, I assume, and Aguirre?) and which are just because nobody else has actually seen them (The Good, the Bad, the Weird?.) As always, though, every single beloved orphan is essentially a crime of neglect, for which I must repent, as I hardly participated at all.

I'll echo the chorus here, Domino, and thank you for your work. Looking over the list I'm shocked at how many great films I completely forgot about when compiling my list. I could easily have the first half of an alternative submission with just the overlooked titles alone! Also, I'm going through my 'to-see list' for the faith project right now and found dozens of WWI & WWII films that I didn't watch. I can only wonder what my final list would have looked like had I actually maintained my pace prior to the start of classes. Here's my list with the orphans highlighted:

My orphans were:

6. La Jetée - I was chancing it on including this, but it is kind of a 'memories of pre-war' film, reminiscing about a pre-conflict era from a devastated future!
10. A Midnight Clear - a film that places more emphasis on the tension between American troops and German POWs. It is the more in depth, upsetting and less patronising version of material that Saving Private Ryan did a few years later
18. Atonement - the best critique of problematic WWII fetishisation bar none!
25. A Foreign Affair - post war, so I can understand this being an orphan, but I wanted to cast my net wide and into mixings of other genres as well. It also stands in for Soderbergh's The Good German too! (And also for I Was A Male War Bride!)
29. The Longest Day - I'm glad that I added this one in as an example of blockbuster spectacle (it is also standing in for Dunkirk, D-Day, The 6th June, A Bridge Too Far, etc, etc) and it mainly made my list for the attempt at coming at D-Day from many different viewpoints. Selfishly I also added it because I went with my school to visit the Normandy landing beaches, the war cemeteries, and we also spent a day at Sainte-Mère-Eglise which is where the event of that paratrooper getting caught on the spire of the cathedral, which gets depicted in this film, happened.
32. Strategic Air Command - another borderline war film, more a drama about Cold Wars on the home front
35. Armadillo - the documentary about Danish troops on the frontline in Afghanistan. This is also standing for my vote for the other Afghan war documentary, Restrepo.
38. Breaker Morant - the Boer War-set Australian, albeit arguably more morally murky, film that goes into similar courtmartial territory to Paths of Glory. "Shoot straight, you bastards!"
43. 84 Charlie MoPic. I'll let Alex Cox introduce this one, a shakeycam film predating Blair Witch Project by about a decade.
44. Hope and Glory - more homefront material, this time John Boorman's semi-autobiographical tale of growing up in London during the blitz. Boorman's recently released Queen and Country is continuing the story.
45. Gardens of Stone - more war fallout
46. Pastor Hall - this might also make my faith list, in which the outspoken Pastor Neimuller gets sent to Dachau concentration camp for speaking out against the Nazi Party.
49. 9th Company - I realised that I had forgotten to add any Russian war films to my list at the last moment, and assuming that the old guard would be represented decided to throw 9th Company into the bottom end of my list, about the Russians themselves having a difficult time in Afghanistan in the 1980s. It is a film that puts the bomb into bombastic, and I think even Michael Bay might ask them to tone things down a little, but I thought I should throw it in there!

I do hope all the Paths of Glory fanatics make time at some point for "Yellow," Zemeckis' cheeky use of Kirk Douglas and (other) son in a similar yet deliciously twisted take on the same questions of self-sacrifice and "cowardice". It was a perfect Number 50 slot-filler. Pretty disappointed that sure-fire classics in the genre like the Bridges and Toko-Ri and Since You Went Away were Orphaned, and I think if more people would give the surprise wonder of In Country a shot, it'd be better represented here and in the 80s thread (where I was responsible for twin orphanings). Outside of Strangelove, Red Scare stuff didn't really factor much, so my picks of Trial and Matinee stick out, but they're such rich films that I regret nothing.

Most of these I've already discussed earlier in the thread.

01. Shame (Ingmar Bergman, 1968)
02. Come and See (Elem Klimov, 1985) -- These two films feel like they could be about most any war. I guess that's part of what bumped them to the top of my list.
03. To Be or Not to Be (Ernst Lubitsch, 1942)
04. The General (Buster Keaton & Clyde Bruckman, 1926)
05. Duck Soup (Leo McCarey, 1933)
06. The Cranes Are Flying (Mikhail Kalatozov, 1957)
07. Krakatit (Otakar Vávra, 1949) ORPHAN/SPOTLIGHT
08. Hiroshima mon amour (Alain Resnais, 1959)
09. Went the Day Well? (Alberto Cavalcanti, 1942)
10. Dr. Strangelove (Stanley Kubrick, 1964)
11. Act of Violence (Fred Zinnemann, 1948) ALSO-RAN
12. Zvenigora (Aleksandr Dovzhenko, 1928) ORPHAN/PSEUDO-SPOTLIGHT -- I've gotten quite good at picking films that need to be spotlighted/less good at convincing anyone else to vote for them. Hopefully people are at least seeking them out and only not voting for them out of spite.
13. The Round-Up (Miklós Jancsó, 1966)
14. The More the Merrier (George Stevens, 1943)
15. The Sinking of the Lusitania (Winsor McCay, 1918) ORPHAN -- I'm disappointed that I won't be able to vote for this animated war documentary again in the foreseeable future.
16. The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger, 1943)
17. La Grande Illusion (Jean Renoir, 1937)
18. Tertium non datur (Lucian Pintilie, 2006) ALSO-RAN -- Thanks to zedz' last minute reminder to dig into my Pintilie set.
19. Army of Shadows (Jean-Pierre Melville, 1969)
20. Germany Year Zero (Roberto Rossellini, 1948)
21. Waterloo Bridge (James Whale, 1931) ALSO-RAN
22. Four Lions (Christopher Morris, 2010) ALSO-RAN -- Possibly a bit of a stretch for the genre, but I love it so much that I had to take the chance. (Ditto The More the Merrier.)
23. The Silent Village (Humphrey Jennings, 1943) ALSO-RAN
24. Crossroads (Bruce Conner, 1976) ORPHAN
25. Shoah (Claude Lanzmann, 1985)
26. Battleship Potemkin (Sergei Eisenstein, 1925)
27. Napoléon (Abel Gance, 1927) ALSO-RAN -- And here I thought Potemkin would be the slightly iffy-for-the-genre silent behemoth that too many people would forget to vote for for it to place prominently.
28. Men in War (Anthony Mann, 1957) -- A little surprised this didn't take the top prize like Mann's iconically titled western did (but not really).
29. The War Game (Peter Watkins, 1965)
30. Archangel (Guy Maddin, 1990) ALSO-RAN
31. Red Angel (Yasuzō Masumura, 1966)
32. Fail-Safe (Sidney Lumet, 1964) ORPHAN
33. Objective, Burma! (Raoul Walsh, 1945) ALSO-RAN
34. Fixed Bayonets! (Samuel Fuller, 1951)
35. Sunday Dinner for a Soldier (Lloyd Bacon, 1944) ALSO-RAN -- Probably would have made the final list if domino hadn't begged for more contributors. :P
36. Captured (John Krish, 1959)
37. The Best Years of Our Lives (William Wyler, 1946)
38. 79 primaveras (Santiago Álvarez, 1969) ALSO-RAN
39. Renaissance (Walerian Borowczyk, 1964) ORPHAN
40. Lawrence of Arabia (David Lean, 1962)
41. Diamonds of the Night (Jan Němec, 1964)
42. Blockade (Sergei Loznitsa, 2006) ALSO-RAN
43. Level Five (Chris Marker, 1997) ALSO-RAN
44. The Time That Remains (Elia Suleiman, 2009) ORPHAN
45. Love and Death (Woody Allen, 1975) ALSO-RAN
46. Crazy (Heddy Honigmann, 2000) ALSO-RAN
47. I Dood It (Vincente Minnelli, 1943) ORPHAN
48. When the Wind Blows (Jimmy Murakami, 1986)
49. Blitz Wolf (Tex Avery, 1942) ALSO-RAN
50. Resisting Enemy Interrogation (Bernard Vorhaus, 1944)

Another big thank-you to Domino for a grand job!

My top ten:

1) A Matter of Life and Death (P&P) - a favourite of mine for 35 years, ever since I saw it as a child who didn't like war films.
2) Fires Were Started (Jennings)
3) The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (P&P)
4) Diary for Timothy (Jennings)
5) La Grande Illusion (Renoir)
6) The World at War (Isaacs) - Orphan (really?) - OK, so 40 years of research have highlighted its shortcomings, but this still a monumental piece of work. Carl Davis's score and Olivier's narration are the icing on the cake. One of two of the great TV documentary series I saw when young (the other being Life on Earth) and have held up to several subsequent viewings.
7) Went the Day Well? (Cavalcanti)
8) The Human Condition (Kobayashi)
9) The Best Years of Our Lives (Wyler)
10) Land and Freedom (Loach)

Orphans:

14) Next of Kin (Dickinson) - also Spotlight. Did anyone else catch this? Or am I really the only one who loves this gripping, paranoid warning that Careless Talk Costs Lives?
18) Lacombe Lucien (Malle) - I like Au Revoir Les Enfants, but for me this is Malle's finer film about the war, and one of his finest full stop.
22) San Demetrio, London (Frend) - No surprise that this was an orphan, but I have a soft spot for Ealing's wartime output and this is one of their best. It was only last night when I realised I hadn't included the equally fine Western Approaches (Pat Jackson, 1944) - but they're both impressive men-versus-the elements-and-the-enemy-true(ish)-stories.
24) Ride With the Devil (Lee) - I know Lee isn't the most popular around here, but for me this is his best film.
26) Men of the Lightship (MacDonald) - Amazingly, the only non-Jennings British wartime documentary on my list. Subtly angry and extremely moving.
31) The Battle of Midway (Ford) - Again, really? Maybe it's just the film jumping as bombs explode around (which I remember Bazin admiring - yup, I watched this is a film studies class!) but this feels genuinely immersive in a way I've never found some of the other, equally filmed-in-combat films from the war. Or maybe it was just seeing it projected (from 16 or 35 mm, I forget which) that means it gets stuck in my memory.
32) Life is Beautiful (Benigni) - I first saw this at the LFF where Benigni - introducing the film - did the whole schtick which seemed spontaneous then, but by the time he's repeating it at the Oscars rather less so. My first viewing of the film saw me finding the second half of the film vastly superior to the first, subsequent viewings have seen me come to love the first half as well. I know that this is a real divider of the film, but I'm firmly in the supporing camp.
37) Stalag 17 (Wilder) - Another surprise orphan. Really? No really?? Oh well...
40) The Bells Go Down (Dearden) - This on the other hand was no surprise. Another great Ealing classes coming together film, and one which features both James Mason and Tommy Trinder fighting fires during the blitz - and one which stresses the danger they face (not all the characters survive the film).
50) Daleks - Invasion Earth: 2150AD (Flemyng) - Another non-surprise as Peter Cushing and Bernard Cribbins save London and Bedford from Nazi Pepperpots, and probably the film on the list that I have seen most often (and the source of my avatar)

I also voted for Regeneration (the Word War I poet rehabilitation film) Nabob, so at least that was an also ran rather than an orphan!

Re: World at War being Orphaned-- I love the series and it's invaluable to me at present because I often excerpt it in the classroom, but it and the Civil War veer too much into being a TV series rather than a miniseries for me (and my American sensibilities that differentiate such things), so I didn't personally cast ballots for them despite an affinity for both. I'm sure I'm sorry!
