That sounds as good a way to settle it as any; perhaps after giving the poster 24 hours notice to revert.

Isn't the simplest solution just to lose the duplicate vote and bump everything further down the list up a notch?[/speaking from experience]

I thought all you guys cared about was starting the '80s list. :P

Seriously though, if I haven't heard by tomorrow morning I'll just post the results treating the list like zedz suggests. In the meantime, to tide everyone over, here is the name of one of the films that received at least one vote during this round of the '70s project:

The Godfather

The last list has now been corrected and all is right with the world. Many thanks to everyone for your participation in this latest round of the lists project! I'll be posting the results shortly in the next three posts. Here again is a guide to what the figures listed after each film represent, each separated with a slash mark:

1. Total points (50 for each #1 placement, 49 for each #2, etc.)
2. Number of lists the film appeared on (out of 34 submitted). If the film appeared in anyone's top 10, the number of top 10 appearances is also denoted in parentheses.
3. Highest placement of the film on any one list. If more than one person ranked the film this high, this is also denoted in parentheses.
4. Change in position from the 2008 list, with movements of 10 or more highlighted.

So for example, the 331/8(6)/2(x2)/-1 shown for The Godfather Part II means that it scored 331 points and appeared on 8 lists (and six top 10s), with two people ranking it as high as #2. The film also moved down one position from its placement on the 2008 list.

For the list of orphans, only figure #3 is displayed (the highest rank, not the score given).

If anyone would like me to PM them a list of how all of their picks fared in the overall tally (rather than having to scour through all of the results) it's a simple thing for me to do. Just let me know.

The 1980s discussion is already under way here. But feel free to continue discussion in this thread regarding the results of the project and to share your individual lists (including defenses of your poor-faring favorites).

Clue Answer Key

With 3 lists in, there's currently one film in the top 10 that didn't make the prior list's top 100. And two directors have 3 films each in the top 20, one American, one not.
SpoilerShow
The Wicker Man. Altman and Herzog.
One of the directors that I initially said had three films in the top 20 has only gotten one measly vote since, and as a result now has zero films there. Two films polling strongly (currently at #4 and #7) were absent from the prior vote entirely.
SpoilerShow
Herzog. Du côté d'Orouët and Phantom of the Paradise.
There's one film on the list that two people so far have voted for, and both of them misspelled the film's title the exact same way!
SpoilerShow
Mickey, er, Mikey and Nicky
There are currently two ties in the top 100 where the films tied are by the same director.
SpoilerShow
American Graffiti/Star Wars and Cries and Whispers/Scenes from a Marriage
The top 10 comprises five countries and eight directors. The current #1 film is the only film from its country in the top 10. Two top 10 films by the same director are tied.
SpoilerShow
Celine and Julie Go Boating. Stalker and Mirror.
Thanks to very high placements on all five lists that I've received so far today, a film that last night wasn't even in the top 10 is now comfortably our new #1!
SpoilerShow
Chinatown

+1. And I'm especially worried about what happened to Fassbinder, Angelopoulos and Makavejev. Good to see that at least Rivette retains his fan base, even though I can't believe that I was really the only one who voted for "Noroit". Did Michael Kerpan forget to hand in his list? ;)

Oh I was certain Stalker was going to be #1 after swo17's clue on Sunday. Still, good to see two top ten spots for Tarkovsky.

Didn't forget -- just insufficient time (and mental energy) to make such a long list.

Thanks so much for doing all the calculations and organizing Swo!

Biggest surprise for me is seeing Cría Cuervos on the casualties list after getting a film club discussion dedicated to it recently.

Even if it had been at one point, these things are constantly in flux.

As for the list being safe, that's only true perhaps if you refuse to look beyond the top 100 films. If you're familiar with the law of large numbers, it's inevitable that when you start compiling upwards of 30 lists, it's going to start to look pretty homogenized. We had 34 lists submitted this time. There were 29 last time, and I'm guessing 20-23 the first time. For the first iteration of the list in 2005, a film had to have just 64 points to make the top 100. The top 86 also-rans this time have at least that many points. At various points in the tabulation process, many of those films were included in the top 100. But when you add enough other lists, these films start to get replaced by things like, say, The French Connection or Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, films we're generally all familiar with, and that a relatively large number of people like, but few enough to place them terribly high on their lists. I think the most interesting picks are the ones that have very strong support from just two or three people, but two or three voters can only give out so many points, and these films are always going to have a difficult time making the top 100 as long as more than 30 people are voting. (Only four films were able to make the top 100 this time with only three supporters, two of them tied for #99.) I've actually looked back at the results of various lists and it's pretty consistent that the number of points a film will need to make the top 100 is close to 3.5 times the number of people participating.

Honestly, when I'm compiling, there are generally very few lists submitted that are strictly composed of mainstream, safe choices. And even if someone were to submit a list that was like 49 of every mainstream, obvious movie that I hate plus one film that I only came to know of and treasure because of their recommendation during this project, I would be glad that that person participated.

This comment equally applies to all of these projects, just as this criticism comes up every single time.

The Top 10 list looks a helluva lot like my Top Ten list, although I had The Godfather top, instead of Chinatown.
I might have liked to rank some leftfield, cult movie #1, - or even a previously-underappreciated film by a major director, such as Sam Peckinpah's 'Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia' - but The Godfather, Chinatown, and Nicolas Roeg's 'Don't Look Now' have stood up to repeated viewings since my original cinema viewing, backintheday, and despite much head-scratching there just wasn't any legitimate reasons I could see for their downgrading.

That list of also-rans - including orphans - looks a veritable treasure-trove, and I hope to explore in more detail, later.

I'll scrutinise the list more closely shortly to see which if any of my list are among the orphans.

And thanks to swo for sterling work in its rounding-up, organisation, and compilation.

P.S. If anyone would like me to PM them a list of how all of their picks fared in the overall tally (rather than having to scour through all of the results) it's a simple thing for me to do. Just let me know.

Do you mean the number of points (as opposed to votes)?
