Just to keep all of your expectations in check, a film presently needs to have at least 108 points to make the top 100 (and this figure will surely increase as more votes come in). That's means either really strong support from at least three people, or weak support from a whole lot more than that. For example, the current #70 position has 10 votes, and the current #95 has 7. There's another film that's appeared on 6 lists so far but isn't in the top 100.

Surely you just vote for the best fifty films, regardless of whether that means they were directed by ten, twenty or fifty different men? Auteur theory running wild.
I think this has come up before, but I can see where people are coming from. There's a large part of this listmaking exercise that's always going to be artificial and arbitrary, and I'd hate to have to swear on a stack of Origin of the Species that every one of the fifty films I select from a particular decade is subjectively better than any other film from that period that I've ever seen. But making a list like this is also to a significant extent a statement of intent, and I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting to make my list somewhat representative of what I value about the period. Thus there were a number of 'must haves' I had in mind when making my list (not all of which I ended up having), and something's gotta give! It's much easier to bump a third or fourth film by a beloved filmmaker (Death by Hanging, you're for the drop) or a well-worn classic that really doesn't need one more vote of confidence (thus Psycho gets slashed) than to omit the only film by a desperately undervalued filmmaker like Shadi Abdelsalam.

That said, I ended up with six directors who were represented by two films on my final list: Imamura, Jansco, Oshima, Paradzhanov, Pasolini and Yoshida. And looking at those names, they give a pretty fair indication of the personal importance their work during this period has for me, to the extent that not having them 'over'-represented on my 60s list would feel like a misrepresentation.

When a decade is really crowded, I tend to have a hard time making room for multiple films, from a single director or otherwise, that I like for very similar reasons, if only to ensure that my list is representative of as many of my interests as possible. That being said, I still had room this time for four films by Pasolini, each of which bring pleasure to a different part of my brain, even if they are mostly all recognizable as the work of the same director. Same goes for four other directors that made my list with two films each.

Just submitted my list, I didn't exactly go right up to the deadline, but I was so worn out after my last minute Eros + Massacre and L'amour Fou viewings, that I didn't think I would be able to give any other films my full attention.

Thanks to this post countries game everyone's playing, I'm pretty sure my #1 vote has gone to waste, but oh well. I'll still play anyways since it's almost list time.

France - 13
Japan - 8
Czechoslovakia - 7
Italy - 5
USSR - 4
USA - 3
Hong Kong - 2
Hungary - 2
Canada - 1
Chile - 1
Denmark - 1
India - 1
Sweden - 1
UK - 1

Also: On the topic on why spread you votes between different directors. I find in addition to the reasons already mentioned, I also find it easier to compare films made by a same director than films made by different directors. So when I need to knock a film off, it's easier to find a director with more than 1 film and think "well this film is great, but not quite as great as their other film", than it is to knock off a film by a director with only 1 film on my list. Though quite a few directors have several films I consider essential, so I have no problem giving multiple votes to a particular director I like.

It never even occurred to me that Ruiz was making films this early on. You should have spoken up about it sooner!

I didn't put together preliminary list until very recently, so I wasn't even completely sure what I was voting for. Ah well :/

In other big(?) news, the #1 country position, which stayed constant with one country through the first 33 lists submitted, has just gone to someone else.

Have you seen Annychka (Ivchenko - 1968), swo? If you like Ukrainian Poetic Cinema on the whole, then I think you'll like that. It's probably going to make my list.
I wouldn't know the difference, but supposedly it was in Russian. And probably cropped. And generally looking like pixelized VHS. That's great to hear that there's a better source. (Before I made my initial post, I searched the forum for any mention of Ilyenko but it didn't turn up your variant spelling.)

Haven't seen the Ivchenko and I don't see where it might be available anywhere. EDIT: I see now it's on the Mykolaychuk set from Ukraine, but I'm unfortunately not going to have a chance to get that before the deadline.
This is what I have for Ivan:

That looks gorgeous, a great improvement. And now for the results...

Thanks again to everyone for your participation in this latest, longest round of the lists project! I'll be posting the results shortly in the next three posts. Here again is a guide to what the figures listed after each film represent, each separated with a slash mark:

1. Total points (50 for each #1 placement, 49 for each #2, etc.)
2. Number of lists the film appeared on (out of 35 submitted). If the film appeared in anyone's top 10, the number of top 10 appearances is also denoted in parentheses.
3. Highest placement of the film on any one list. If more than one person ranked the film this high, this is also denoted in parentheses.
4. Change in position from the 2007 list, with movements of 10 or more highlighted.

So for example, the 321/9(4)/1(x2)/+5 shown for The Wild Bunch means that it scored 321 points and appeared on 9 lists (and four top 10s), with two people ranking it as high as #1. The film also moved up 5 positions from its placement on the 2007 list.

For the list of orphans, only figure #3 is displayed (the highest rank, not the score given).

The 1970s thread will start in the next day or so. In the meantime, feel free to discuss the results in this thread, or to defend your poor faring favorites here.

Thanks, Swo. I think that we all owe you a debt of gratitude for your hard work on this iteration of the list. Also, thanks to all of the contributors. There are some suggestions here that I've never seen before, and will definitely check out given this forum's superlative tastes.

I'll be back with a further analysis of this list and my contribution, but for now here were my top 10:

1. Battle of Algiers
2. Z
3. Winter Light
4. 2001: A Space Odyssey
5. The Red and the White
6. Inherit the Wind
7. Kwaidan
8. El Cid
9. The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner
10. Ordinary Fascism

Clue Answer Key

Most of these answers are no longer anywhere near accurate, but they give a sense of how the list evolves over time.

1. With eight lists in, only two of the films currently in the top 10 have not been released on Blu-ray somewhere in the world. Both are by the same director.
SpoilerShow
Bergman's Persona and Winter Light
2. The top 3 are all from the same country, and two of them are from the same year.
SpoilerShow
USA 1960
3. About midway through the list, there are two consecutive two-way ties between the films of a single director, one American, the other French. You will never guess either of them.
SpoilerShow
Chabrol and Rossen
4. There is one rather prominent film that showed up in zero of the first ten lists submitted, but in all but one of the last six, presently placing it in our overall top 10.
SpoilerShow
Play Time
5. The current #5 film only barely placed in the last project, somewhere in the bottom quarter of the top 100.
SpoilerShow
Pierrot le fou
6. Two films in the prior top 20 are nowhere near the current top 100.
SpoilerShow
Cleo from 5 to 7 and Jules and Jim
7. Nine films in the current top 50 didn't make the last list.
SpoilerShow
Medea, Marketa Lazarová, The Young Girls of Rochefort, The Cremator, The Round-Up, Z, Bonnie and Clyde, Inferno of First Love, Marnie
8. In both the current list and the prior one, two directors have had two films each in the top 10. Only this time it's not the same two directors.
SpoilerShow
Hitchcock and Antonioni
9. The clear favorite from the first 10 lists submitted is now sitting at #10.
SpoilerShow
The Apartment
10. The seemingly unshakable #1 film for the past 12 lists has been dethroned!
SpoilerShow
Psycho dethroned by 2001
11. Another director now has two films in the top 10, kicking out one of the directors I'd mentioned earlier.
SpoilerShow
Kubrick
12. The current #70 position has 10 votes, and the current #95 has 7. There's another film that's appeared on 6 lists so far but isn't in the top 100.
SpoilerShow
Cleo from 5 to 7, Il Vangelo secondo Matteo, and When a Woman Ascends the Stairs
13. In other big(?) news, the #1 country position, which stayed constant with one country through the first 33 lists submitted, has just gone to someone else.
SpoilerShow
From the USA to France

Thanks for all your work swo!

Really great list, the sheer number of masterpieces in the also-rans section shows what a brilliant decade this was for film. I didn't get to watch as many films as I'd planned, but did make some really great discoveries thanks to the discussion (the big ones being Yoshida and the last minute Ilyenko recommendation). I also wish I'd championed a few of my favorites more, though given the tight competition, I'm not sure how much it would've mattered.

Really glad the list didn't lose too many classics, but still managed to make room for new discoveries like Marketa Lazarová.

My only biggest personal disappointment is seeing The House Is Black on the casualty list. This was a really important film to one of my favorite teachers in film school, and I completely forgot to re-watch it and consider it for my list. But since it made the list the last round, I really have no excuse for forgetting.

Later today I'll post write ups for all my orphans, and perhaps my also-rans in the sad panda thread.

Thanks a lot for your hard work, swo. The final list surprises me in so far as it doesn't seem to reflect the discussion in this thread very much. I had the impression nearly everyone loved Pasolini, for instance, so I'm surprised that he ended up so low. I'm equally surprised that 'standard' stuff like "2001" or "Once upon a time in the west" actually gained a higher position than in the last list, while Yoshida's "Eros + Massacre" placed lower than before, given that it received quite a bit of recommendation.

So, what happened? Many more lists than the last time from 'quiet participants'? Just curious.

I don't know how many people participated last time, but just based on how many points were given out both times, there were clearly at least a few more participants this round. (For instance, in the prior list, 90 points were enough to make the top 100. Now a film needed 123.) Just that alone is going to make the final list tend to look a little more "canonical." And plenty of people had votes for a ton of obscure stuff with something like Once Upon a Time in the West thrown in as well.

Many thanks to all who participated. Good job, swo.

Tommaso, with more votes for Pasolini he would have finished ahead of Fellini! Germi, Rossellini, Cottafavi, Bava, Comencini, Visconti, Rosi and Olmi (the Italian guys on my ballot) have been less fortunate.

Pasolini actually ranked really high on the director list, so I would assume vote splitting and his lack of 1 single standout title that everyone could rally behind was the main reason he didn't do better.

Vláčil did a lot worse than Pasolini, but since all his votes seemed to funnel straight into Marketa Lazarová, it placed quite high.

Even though Yoshida had a big rally title, he seemed to suffer from a little bit of vote splitting as well, and had less overall support than either of the other two. Still, I think just making the top 100 in a list this competitive is a huge achievement.

Which he would have entirely deserved

Looking at the 'rise and fall' indicators, I must admit that I wasn't aware that "Medea" hadn't been at all on the last list and that it jumped up by 125 positions. Which I like, of course, but I simply thought he was regarded as such an influential or at least distinguished filmmaker that he would easily be as popular as Antonioni. Just my twisted perception, probably. Interesting that the only other of his films that made the list is "Porcile", which is a very demanding and disturbing film which I never thought would be particularly popular (and I also thought it was much less known than many of his other works).

Of course. The main problem with Yoshida is that his works are so difficult to see in the West, outside of France. But then, that also goes for Naruse's "Yearning" which placed higher (and I apologize for not having found the time to see it). But after all it made the list, and not the easily available "When a woman ascends the stairs". So my theory about the lack of access to these films might be contradicted already.

I can only speak from personal experience in this case, or I'd be really grasping at straws.

I think Naruse having some releases in the west has built up a lot of support over time, more people are seeking out his rarer films. I bet if Criterion had released 1 Yoshida film, even if it wasn't Eros + Massacre, people would start investigating and seeking out more of his other films, especially Eros + Massacre. I hadn't heard of Yoshida before this list topic, but I've been seeking out Naruse films ever since I got the MoC set years back.

Also, I personally found Yoshida's films hard to get into on the first viewing. I've only seen Yearning once, and that was enough reason for me to give it a very high spot on my list. With Yoshida I watched A Story Written in Water twice, and I got much more out of it on my second viewing, so I put it pretty high on my list, but no one else voted for it. I only had time to watch Eros + Massacre once, and I liked it quite a bit, but only enough to give it a lower-middle spot on my list.

Notice also that Eros + Massacre and Yearning both got 6 votes each, but Yearning got 3 top ten votes, compared to Eros + Massacre's 1, so Yearning seems to have gotten a lot of big support from the few people who saw it.

Anyways, that's my thin speculation on what might've gone on.

Note that only three people voted for Porcile, but all three placed it very high on their lists. This and The Fire Within were the only two films that were able to make the top 100 with only three votes.
