1960s List Discussion and Suggestions (Lists Project Vol. 3)

#1 Post by swo17 » Mon Sep 17, 2012 8:03 pm

VOTING CLOSED. RESULTS CAN BE FOUND HERE.

If you are reading this sentence, you are eligible to participate in our forum's latest decades lists project exploring the films of the 1960s. If you know anyone adventurous enough--on or off the forum--that you think would also enjoy participating, feel free to invite them as well.

Please PM me your list of what you believe are the top 50 films from the decade toward the end of the project. You may feel that you could compile a list of 50 favorite films from this period much earlier than the deadline, but it's still highly recommended that you engage in the discussions here. Don't keep your favorites a secret, and always be open to suggestions from others!

THE RULES

In the '60s, there were no rules. Thankfully now there are:

1) Each individual list is to comprise no more or less than 50 films, ranked in your order of preference (with no ties). If you haven't yet seen 50 films from the decade that you think are genuinely great (or even if you have), please take advantage of the resources listed below and participate in the ongoing discussions to find films that you can be proud to put on your list.
2) Any feature film, documentary, experimental film, short film, TV miniseries, TV movie, or TV special released in the 1960s (1960-1969) is eligible.
3) The date given on IMDb is the relevant date for determining eligibility, even when it's clearly wrong (unless a special case is made below). If the film is not on IMDb and you say it was released during the 1960s, I'll take your word for it.
4) Multi-part films released separately (e.g. Eisenstein's Ivans) count as one film. Each entry in a trilogy (e.g. Ray's Apus) counts as a separate film.
5) For portmanteau films with multiple directors, each of the individual segments and the film as a whole are all separately eligible.

We might occasionally need to make an exception to rule 3 or 4. If you are seriously considering including a film on your list that you have a question about in this regard, bring it up in this thread and we'll iron it out.

For more details about rules and procedures, please refer here.

ELIGIBILITY – REMINDERS / SPECIAL CASES

Larks on a String is eligible as a 1960s film, even though IMDb lists it as a '90s film (it was banned from release for 22 years).

Skolimowski's 1967 version of Hands Up/Rece do góry is eligible as a 1960s film. IMDb presently only lists the 1981 version with the same title, but these are two different films.

The Plot Against Harry is eligible as a 1960s film, even though IMDb lists it as an '80s film (it was shelved for 20 years).

The Human Condition, pt. 3 is not eligible, as the entirety of that multi-part film was eligible for our '50s project.

The following multi-part films count as one film for purposes of this project (this is just a reminder, not an exhaustive list): Dog Star Man, Scenes from Under Childhood, I Am Curious

The following films may be cited as 1960s releases in some places, but not on IMDb, and so are not eligible for this list: Anticipation of the Night, Jazz on a Summer's Day, The Great War, The Law, Le Signe du lion, The Wayward Girl, The Conformist, A Touch of Zen, The Wild Child, Days and Nights in the Forest, Le Vent d’est, Shadows, The Ear, La Rupture, Whity, Case for a Rookie Hangman, Du côté d'Orouët, Apotheosis, Bronco Bullfrog, Kustom Kar Kommandos, Hi Mom!, Adelheid, Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome

The following films are cited as 1960s films on IMDb, and so are eligible for this list, regardless of what anyone else might say: Une histoire d'eau, Window Water Baby Moving, The Brain That Wouldn't Die, Cruel Story of Youth, Le Trou, Together (Mazzetti), The Nightingale's Prayer, The Savage Eye, Letter Never Sent, Eyes Without a Face, Breathless, A la Mode, The Virgin Spring, The Sorrow and the Pity, Kapò, The Honeymoon Killers, The Testament of Orpheus, The End of Summer, Eros + Massacre, Walden, The Gladiators, Medea, Smoking, Diary of a Shinjuku Thief, The Night of Counting the Years, Kes, Burn!, My Night at Maud's

FORUM MEMBER SPOTLIGHTS

Is there a film you love that you fear is under most people's radar? Try shining a light on it! To inaugurate a film into the spotlight section, just follow these three simple steps:

1. Make a post about the film discussing why you find it so exceptional.
2. Clearly indicate that you wish the film to be one of your spotlight titles.
3. Direct others to where the film can be found.

I'll keep track of all the spotlight titles here so that they can be easily referenced. You're welcome to have more than one spotlight title, but try not to have too many more, so it's manageable for everyone to be able to see them all.

Everyone is strongly encouraged to give each of these films the same chance that you would hope others would give your own spotlight titles.

1960s Experimental Film on DVD

Here’s a list of experimental films that are available on DVD, listed by filmmaker, with the best / most accessible source noted. I’ve adopted the same format and approach as I did with the 50s project, but there are many more films out there this time, and probably much, much more that I’ve overlooked or wasn’t aware of. I’ve limited it in most cases to sources with verified English subtitles, unless the films in question don’t require subtitles. As you’d expect, some demarcations may be a little arbitrary. For instance, I’ve classified almost all of Kluge’s and Herzog’s shorts as experimental, but not those of most other 60s auteurs, and I’ve generally excluded narrative features – even really weird ones – unless they clearly come from an experimental tradition (e.g.Warhol) or they ’re so radical that they break down traditional film forms (e.g. Die Parallelstrasse).

There’s such a wealth of great material available from this decade that, rather than spotlighting a particular title, I’m going to try and put together a list of 50 films, by 50 different filmmakers, that are available on DVD or BluRay and well worth your time, with brief blurbs about what makes them special.

1960s Experimental Film on DVD – Buying Guide

In answer to a concerned call from swo17’s bank manager (and because my original post was evidently not quite large enough to crash the forum), here’s a list of highly, merely and lightly recommended discs from the big pile-up above. Please note that my estimations of worth are purely subjective and that I haven’t seen every disc I catalogued (but I have every one I’m recommending.)

WHAT, YOU DON’T OWN THIS ALREADY?: ESSENTIAL VIEWING
Useful starting points, major surveys of major artists etc.

Treasures IV: American Avant-Garde Film 1947-1986 (Image) – ‘Start Here’ might as well be printed in big red letters on the front of the box. This primer should also give you an idea of where you want to explore next.

Andy Warhol Anthology (Raro Video) – An embarrassment of riches – though there are plenty more unreleased – accompanied by comprehensive programme notes and contextualizing interviews. A grounding in Warhol is essential for getting a grasp on a lot of 60s and post-60s American experimental film.

By Brakhage (Criterion) – Go for the two-volume BluRay set. Incredible filmmaking riches, and unbelievable presentation.

Flux Film Anthology (Re:Voir) – Pretty much complete collection of a major experimental clique. Lots of big names represented (Maciunas, Ono, Sharits), though not always with their most representative material. Excellent, bilingual book of programme notes.

Jan Svankmajer: The Complete Short Films (BFI) – Impeccable representation of one of the great bodies of work in 20th century filmmaking.

Magick Lantern Cycle (BFI) – An essential collection for all sorts of reasons, and indeed for Scorpio Rising alone, but the 60s is by far Anger’s strongest decade.

Norman McLaren: The Master’s Edition (Image) – Insanely compendious collection of relentless genius.

Val Del Omar: Elemental de Espana (Cameo) – Yes, there are only two 60s films included, but that’s probably the majority of his extant output, and once you see this set, and the films, you’ll no longer be questioning it getting the highest possible recommendation.

Walden (Microcinema) – A magnum opus of 60s experimental cinema. Comes complete with a big fat book. Currently OOP, it seems, but Potemkine / Agnes B. in France seem to be on the brink of issuing a Mekas box set that will include this and a lot more besides.

GO ON, YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Well-programmed surveys, discs containing major masterpieces, or collections that will also prove very useful, or even essential, for the 70s list.

Anthology of Polish Experimental Animation (PWA / NiNA) – An incredible set, though it extends well beyond the 60s (and well beyond animation as well, but don’t tell anybody I told you!)

GAZWRX: The Films of Jeff Keen (BFI) – Keen’s probably more of an acquired taste than many of the well-anthologized filmmakers, but the BFI set is phenomenal and includes some amazing films.

A Hollis Frampton Odyssey (Criterion) – An essential set, though it’s the 70s films that are the major masterpieces.

The House Is Black (Facets) (Disc included with Issue 7 of French publication Cinema has a superior transfer, but French subs only) – The only reason this isn’t in the ‘Essential’ pile is that it’s only a single short film, compared to the packed sets recommended above. The film itself is beyond essential. See it however you can.

La Jetee / Sans Soleil (Criterion) – No explanation necessary. No recommendation necessary either, I guess, but what the hell.

Jordan Belson: 5 Essential Films (CVM) – Visionary voyages ahoy. Particularly recommended for fans of the ‘Stargate’ sequence of 2001.

Mandala Films (Re:Voir) – This stuff is pretty assaultive, and pretty brilliant. T,O,U,C,H,I,N,G is an essential film for this list project.

Die Parallelstrasse (Edition Filmmuseum) – What a film! This Kafkaesque headtrip is, essentially, the founding film of the New German Cinema, except that the New German Cinema turned out to be completely different and much more conventional. As it is, it stands as one of cinema’s great What Ifs.

Le Revelateur (Re:Voir); La Lit de la vierge (Re:Voir) – If I had to choose, I’d give the edge to Le Revelateur, but both of these consciousness-altering odysseys are stunning.

Rhythms (Re:Voir) – There’s only one 60s film on this compilation, but it’s a doozy, and the rest of the disc is absolutely essential for other decades.

Seven Three Six Two (Lookout Mountain) – One of a number of excellent discs available directly from Pat O’Neill. This would have definitely been in my ‘absolutely essential’ pile if its stunning title film weren’t already available in the Treasures set.

Shoot Shoot Shoot (Re:Voir) – Handy survey of British experimental film from the 60s and 70s. Will be useful next go-round as well.

Werner Herzog Documentaries & Shorts (Herzog) / Signs of Life (Raro Video) – The early shorts are a mixed bag, but Last Words is fantastic, and whichever set you go for, you’re guaranteed lots of collateral greatness.

Wojciech Wiszniewski (PWA / NiNA) – Only two 60s films in this set, but you’re going to need it (and how!) when the 70s roll around, so why not get in early?

SUCK IT AND SEE (IF IT SUCKS): RECOMMENDED WITH A CAVEAT OR TWO
Discs with a higher good-to-dodgy ratio, acquired tastes, stray extras and so on.

Anthology of Polish Animated Film (PWA / NiNA) – An essential collection, to be sure, but the majority of it is not experimental and not from the 1960s, hence this placement.

The Complete Works of Joyce Wieland (Canadian Filmmakers Distribution) – Like it says in the title, there’s a lot here, and some of it is more essential than the rest. The proto-YouTube cat video Cat Food is a complete delight, and Rat Life and Diet in North America is a masterpiece, and funny as hell. There’s also her fantastic collaboration with Hollis Frampton, though it won’t be eligible this time around.

Daniel Szczechura (NiNA) – The only single-animator collection NiNA managed to release before they gave up the ghost. Szczechura wouldn’t have been my first (only) choice, but it’s a great set nonetheless.

George Washington (Criterion) – Here the stray extra is Gulager’s A Day with the Boys (which is probably borderline experimental, but very pretty).

John Latham Films 1960-1971 (Lux) – Two great films on a well-curated set is more than enough for a recommendation from me.

Kurt Kren: Structural Films (Index) – This disc seemed to me to contain his best work. If you have a particularly strong stomach, or are doing the 60s List Project on a dare, you may also want to try the ‘Action Films’ set.

The Lawrence Jordan Album (Facets) – I’m not a huge Jordan fan, but this is a very impressive set. If you like what you see of his work in the Treasures Avant Garde set, don’t hesitate; if you don’t: hesitate.

Die Oberhausener (Edition Filmmuseum) – Only a handful of the films in this set could fairly be described as ‘experimental’, but it’s a hugely valuable and revealing survey of an underexplored, crucial period of film history.

Requiem for a Village (BFI) – Has the utterly gorgeous An Untitled Film as an extra. Buy it on BluRay to take full advantage of one of the most beautiful transfers you’ve ever seen.

Serpentine Gallery Program (Edition Filmmuseum); Abscheid von Gestern (Edition Filmmuseum) – The Serpentine disc contains several of Kluge’s shorts, though you’ll have to get Abscheid von Gestern for the epochal Brutality in Stone – though presumably you’ll be planning to see Yesterday Girl anyway for the 60s project.

Sins of the Fleshapoids (Other Cinema) – I wish there were an equivalent disc of George Kuchar films, but Mike can be fun too, and I genuinely love The Secret of Wendel Samson.

Symbiopsychotaxiplasm (Criterion) – Relegated down here simply because I’ll need to see it again to decide how recommendable it is, but I remember liking it a lot at the time.

13 Most Beautiful. . . (Plexifilm) – These Screen Tests are beautiful and valuable, though their presentation here as glorified music videos is a bit annoying, and you come away wishing you had a lot more screen tests and a lot less puffery.

Visibles (Re:Voir) – Pre-Gilliam satirical collages. Not my favourite animator, but this a handsome and handy collection.

A Walk into the Sea (Arthouse Films) – Danny Williams’ Factory films, shot with Warhol’s camera, are a million miles away from his mentor’s work, but still very impressive. EDIT: I've double checked this disc and found to my disappointment that the Williams films included on the disc are only tiny fragments, which is especially ridiculous as the complete films were actually distributed with the documentary on its release. If anybody's aware of an edition which includes the entire films (Factory Film, Harold Stevenson and The Velvet Underground) please let me know.

Given that Dom has given up on the Directors guides I figure I'll pick up from him. The first list consisting of Otto Preminger, Robert Rossen, John Schlesinger, and Alexander Mackendrick should be up by Saturday but probably sooner if I can get my Lilith rewatch in sooner than expected. Also unlike Dom I'll try to list shorts and television movies and where to find them if available. The won't be a mandatory facet of the lists though. Speaking of (and I doubt these will come up) if anyone has subs for I tre volti and/or Penn's Flesh and Blood that would be much appreciated.

I'll be very surprised if I don't end up extending the deadline on this one indefinitely for the rest of my life.

Just to recap: this film, which was first screened in one of the most celebrated and well-documented film screenings in British cinema history, on February the 5th, 1956, is a 1960s film.

FOROUGH FARROKHZAD
The House Is Black (1963) – The House Is Black (Facets) (Disc included with Issue 7 of French publication Cinema has a superior transfer, but French subs only)
The language of the subs doesn't matter, zedz: its pure visual poetry; and poetry boasting the most seductive of rhythms
I was sceptical of Jonathan Rosenbaum's evangelising of this one, although having found him for the most part a reliable guide for me I took a punt on that magazine, and the film immediately shot into my all-time Top 100, - or 159, actually, - with the proverbial bullet.
Still haven't read any of the magazine, though!

Despite both my spotlights being American films, this will be the first decade where my ballot is devoted primarily to foreign films.

Tall Story (Joshua Logan 1960) I tried to start a thread about this little-seen gem here, but here we are now. With luck I will get around to finishing my epic 50+ film guide to Hollywood Sex Comedies of the '60s, but either way this is a key text, and certainly the most gentle of the bunch! A hopelessly positive and daffy manufactured romance between Anthony Perkins and Jane Fonda, this is a snapshot of antiquated sexual politics made palatable thanks to the clever script and game performances. Speaking of, I see in my first review of the film I singled out Ray Walston as giving one of the best comedic performances I'd ever seen. I'll go one further: He gives one of the best performances of the decade, no qualification needed. (Warner Archives)

They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (Sydney Pollack 1969) This is my one of my spotlights because I was the only fucking person to vote for it last round. Some of my other Orphans stand a better chance this time (Can you believe I was the only member to vote for Les Demoiselles de Rochefort?) but this may need an extra push to get on the board's radar. Jane Fonda (again!) leads a stellar cast, including Oscar-winning Gig Young and Susannah York in what is bar-nothing the most depressing mainstream American film of all time. Admirably adapting Horace McCoy's source novel, Pollack gives us the ugly and particularly American nightmare of dance marathons, trotting out the victims in a cinematic treatise against reality entertainment (and in the process showing that these voyeuristic tendencies existed before the advent of television). (R1 MGM)

Well I'll more than likely give Les Demoiselles de Rochefort a vote: and I love the soundtrack album, too.
'They Shoot Horses' is probably the only film in Pollack's 'oeuvre' that can lay claim to being considered great: much of that may be down to Young's and Fonda's performances, but he does a great job of adapting Horace McCoy's novel

There's a Russian and German release. I don't know of their quality though.

Got myself three spotlights and I really hope that people actually bother to watch them as all three are likely to be in my top ten.

Report (1967, Bruce Conner)
This is the easiest thing in the world to see and there's no reason not to watch it. Hell I've even got the thing URLed. Anyways this film which in many ways predicts James Benning's works and DePalma's Blow Out examines minutely the Zapruder film and subsequent investigations in as minute detail as possible, but not to get to some lame conspiracy. Instead it tries to understand the immediate reaction to the situation placing you deeply at that moment as if you were witnessing in colour the assassination in real life.

The Death of a Bureaucrat (1966, Tomas G. Alea)
This one is the hardest of the three to find, but Network in the UK has put out an okay disc which I believe is only available on their website. As to the film itself as dank and depressed as the great Soviet films tended to be Cuban cinema is a great land for humour with none funnier than Alea who even opens the film in report form dedicated to his favorite film makers amongst whom include Buster Keaton and Stan Laurel. He takes after them real well too enforcing his themes of the death of the socialist dream through bureaucratic nonsense in such tight mis-en-scene that it takes several viewings to really appreciate the whole of the film. I guarantee that there is no film more universal this decade short of The Apartment.

This Night I Will Possess Your Corpse (1967, José Mojica Marins)
This bizarre film a sequel to Marins' rabid At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul is an even more horrifying look at the madness religion makes in men. Marins more than ever really takes a look at the political implications of a religious society by making the devil the most pious man ever. The ending colour sequence too is such low budget insanity that by itself makes the purchase of any of the various DVDs out there worth picking up. Speaking of which I most recommend the R2 Anchor Bay Coffin Joe set which has the largest variety of films even if the transfers leave much to be desired. Plus you get to see my avatar in action which should be a prize in itself.

I've added a 'disc recommendations' section at the end of my already grossly overlong post about experimental films at the top of the page.

If I'm voting for any Conner, it'll be the absolutely dazzling (literally!) Cosmic Ray.

I'm hoping to actually participate on this list, so expect more input, but I'll start off with one point: if we're including Larks on a String, we should probably also include the equally delayed The Plot Against Harry. Don't know that I'd vote for it, but it's certainly a 1960s film.

I would like to submit three titles as my spotlights if I'm allowed!

The first is Mikio Naruse's Yearning, which is maybe his best film and one of the best films of all time. Naruse here tackles a similar theme to Ozu in asking how the war generation will ever cast off the shackles of a limiting gendered/classed/raced/aged social hierarchy and learn to be individuals in a rapidly approaching 'individual age'. His view here is similarly pessimistic which, when elaborated across an entire society, is shattering. The exploration of theme here unfolds gradually but with mounting intensity, culminating in a single image and a single hard cut whose suicidal finality you will never, ever forget.

The second is Nagisa Ōshima's Japanese Summer: Double Suicide. I would spotlight every single one of his 60s films if I could, no other director had a greater decade-long run. This is one of his best, though, an earthbound sci-fi that almost imagines the 'sun tribe' of his earliest works as the survivors of a cultural apoocalypse. The imagery is some of his most arresting. If a criticism of his work is that his treatments are too academic, its proven wrong here - Ōshima's black comedy is hilarious but develops a truly tender, sad side in the extended climax.

The third is Michael Roemer's Nothing But a Man. This is one of the most unaffectedly touching yet effortlessly political dramas I've seen, and although it was directed by a white Jew you get the impression that it really has its finger on the pulse of the black experience of the mid-60s: Roemer, who was on the Kindertransport as a child, spent a year+ collecting testimonies from black community leaders and apparently worked hard to draw parallels between his experiences of antisemitism and the prejudice against African-Americans during this time. This empathy seems less like empathy and more like self-reflection, such is the feeling of truth in this film. Its gorgeously shot, beautifully acted and it burns with a slow fire that lets us know a change is soon to come.

Some other lesser-seen films that will make my list:

An Autumn Afternoon is my second favourite film ever (my favourite will be making my list too). Its the deepest, darkest, most complete Ozu film - those superlatives could easily be applied to its placement within the wider context of the cinematic tradition: its final shot could easily be the final shot of cinema as a whole. And in terms of its social statement this is probably the most significant Japanese film of this period.

Straits of Hunger (aka A Fugitive from the Past) is incredible, a leviathan crime drama-cum-social exposé that zig-zags between procedural and fugitive stories, bridging chronological gaps and unpeeling its layers of intrigue to reveal the rich drama of character psychology at its centre, as powerful in its descriptions of disguise, distance and sacrifice as a Greek tragedy.

Death by Hanging is probably my favourite Ōshima (although, I expect, more popular than Japanese Summer so I'll leave it off my spotlights) and the culmination of his 'gallery of types' mode of character construction. Each character here provides a specific political symbol and Ōshima's entomological charting of their movements across the film's dreamspace is incredibly complex and exceedingly intelligent.

Eros + Massacre is a behemoth but a rewarding one, a portrait of annoying people doing annoying things in a way that illuminates their surrounding historical context. Taxing but deep as a well, it juxtaposes radically time-displaced storylines, letting them converge before shattering. The complexity of the thesis it creates from their correlation and deconstruction is astounding.

The Executioner is another black comedy about the death penalty, but also about history, forgetting and loss. And like any great comedy it knows how to freeze a laugh into a grimace and uncover the heritage of pain underneath a joke-ready premise.

The Swimmer is bizarre and beautiful, a sort of divergently-evolved Cassavetes: if that director honed the psychological jaggedness of, say, Nicholas Ray and moved it into a rarefied visual context, Perry becomes with this film the next stage of Sirk or Minnelli, adapting their visual elegance, colours and spaces and finding in them an eerie and disturbing emptiness and psychological moorlessness that is very 60s. This might not be the best American film of the 60s (I'd put it near the top, though) but it certainly has to be one of the defining ones.

I'll definitely co-sign on The Swimmer, and Perry's Last Summer is also essential -- a devastating coming-of-age picture featuring one of the decade's great performances in Catherine Burns. It can't possibly be overstated how good she is.

Re: the portmanteau rule, let me highlight two essential entries that will make my list:

Il Lavoro (Luchino Visconti, fr. Boccaccio '70 1962) Visconti's "short" is, at 53 minutes, almost a feature in itself, and it shames the segments it appears with by taking a novel and witty approach to the idea of marriage as a commodity. Romy Schneider dishes out some of the finest feminist rhetoric of the decade in Visconti's forgotten masterpiece

Gare du Nord (Jean Rouch, fr. Paris vu par... 1965) The best portmanteau segment I've ever seen, and a strong contender for my Top 10 this decade. The less said about this fictive one-shot short from documentarian Rouch in advance, the better, but in brief the film juxtaposes conventional domestic discord with something far more unsettling

You could do a great triple bill of 'savage indictments of the American Dream' with Seconds, The Swimmer and They Shoot Horses, Don't They?. You'd be a wreck by the end of it, of course.

The Swimmer is a wonderful and strange film, and a real Burt Lancaster-fest (which is a good thing). He spends the whole film completely naked except for those swimming trunks - and even takes them off at one point, if I remember rightly - which turns out to be a great way of
SpoilerShow
displaying the character's initial boundless self-confidence, and then showing this gradually disintegrating into vulnerability and, in the end, totally desolation: no house, no family, no clothes; just swimming trunks and no pool. The symbolism gets a bit overwrought towards the end, especially when he's scrabbling up that bank after the revelation about his daughters, but it's still a very powerful and haunting film overall. I love Lancaster's fatuous little catchphrase - 'Here's to sugar on our strawberries' - and his frustrated, deluded wail in his old flame's swimming pool: 'You loved it!' Oh, and that creepy scene with the young girl after he hurts his ankle.

Been anticipating this list for a while now. This will probably be the second list I participate in (the first being the 1920s), since 1960s films have made up a large portion of my regular viewing lately. Not sure what availability was like when the past list was made, but I'm hoping more films will show up from Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary given the increased availability on DVD. Of course browsing through the old list, there's not many films I would be too happy to see knocked off.

Yes, I downloaded and combined the available Excel files from TSPDT and DTC, sorted by year to find all the '60s films, and then cleaned it up a bit and added some DVD availability notes.

And I understand that the preacher runs the Doubling the Canon project, so that's how he would know the updates.
