We've still got a couple of days, right? Some last minute cramming, I think.

btw, IMDB has Rabbit's Moon by Kenneth Anger as a 1950 film, even though it wasn't completed (with rock and roll songs that actually complement the film) until the 70s. We're still counting it though I assume?

Yes, you have until the end of the day Sunday.

Yes, we're counting it as a '50s film. I suppose you could make an argument otherwise, but it's kind of a gray area and enough people have already voted for it that I'm not about to change its eligibility now.

One more thought I had about orphans: A lot of it just has to do with what kind of viewer you are. If you had already done a lot of legwork before the project, or if you're exploring on your own the work from directors, regions, or genres that personally interest you, you are naturally going to have many more orphans than someone who primarily sought out films after they had first been recommended in this thread. I think I personally fall more in the second category, with my final list ending up a hodgepodge to some extent of the lists from those of you who contribute most to this thread, so I tend to have less orphans. But many of these films would have been orphans or close to it without my vote. If I submitted my same list to some other hypothetical forum with different participants, I'd have a much higher orphan count.

Just a reminder to everyone putting the final touches on your lists: Please take a moment to review the "eligibility" section of the first post of this thread. I'm getting a lot of lists with films that came out in 1960 per IMDb. In addition, there might be a few films that you think are from the '40s or '60s but that are actually eligible this round.

I know I have contributed as much to this decade as I'd have liked (and when I did I got Ian Carmichael's name wrong...) - but I've just submitted a list. Fairly conventional - the likely orphans I highlighted before (am I the only one around here who loves Seven Days to Noon and The Glass Cage?) - with the usual suspects mixed in with a few British horrors.

I managed a few extra viewings recently - not as much as I'd hoped, and the only additional entrant to my list was Sirk's All That Heaven Allows, although quite how Scaramouche failed to make my list I really don't know. Others whose absence from my list is painful include Rossellini's The Machine That Kills Bad People (saw it over 20 years ago and it still seems fresh in my mind), Dearden's Pool of London, Clayton's The Bespoke Overcoat, Bergman's Summer Interlude, and indeed anything by Fuller. Ouch indeed.

I'm going to be a little busy tomorrow morning and would prefer (if possible) to post the results tonight before I go to bed (late). Is there anyone that was planning on submitting their list later than a couple hours from right now? Please PM me if we need to coordinate anything.

Thanks again to everyone for your participation in this latest round of the lists project! I'll be posting the results shortly in the next three posts. Here again is a guide to what the figures listed after each film represent, each separated with a slash mark:

1. Total points (50 for each #1 placement, 49 for each #2, etc.)
2. Number of lists the film appeared on (out of 31 submitted). If the film appeared in anyone's top 10, the number of top 10 appearances is also denoted in parentheses.
3. Highest placement of the film on any one list. If more than one person ranked the film this high, this is also denoted in parentheses.
4. Change in position from the 2007 list, with movements of 10 or more highlighted.

So for example, the 426/13(5)/1(x2)/+14 shown for The Seventh Seal means that it scored 426 points and appeared on 13 lists (and five top 10s), with two people ranking it as high as #1. The film also moved up 14 positions from its placement on the 2007 list.

For the list of orphans, only figure #3 is displayed (the highest rank, not the score given).

The 1960s thread will start in the next couple days. In the meantime, feel free to discuss the results in this thread, or to defend your poor faring favorites here.

Wow, this was a relatively bad one for Ozu- four of his movies dropped off the list, and every single one of them slipped at least somewhat. I wonder if it's more that he was especially popular last time than that he did poorly this time, or if people just weren't excited by this period of his work this time around, or what? It's obviously not that his work has become less available, given the big BFI project.

Perhaps the BFI project led to a wider spreaded vote? I must admit though that I only voted for Tokyo Story and Good Morning this time.

It's not so much the placings that fascinate me, but the shifts in opinion (I wasn't around for the previous 50s poll). The two Rays and Preminger did very nicely. Satyajit has always been a revered director but more of his work is increasingly available, which has helped. I expect him to have a good 60s. Nick Ray has been on the up for some time in critical circles. Preminger doesn't get so much acclaim in the wider critical community, Laura aside I guess. Good to see the board have so much enthusiasm.

Funny thing is that due to the fall of Shadows none of the US productions I voted for even made the top 125.

Thanks for handling this round so nicely, swo17.

I'm really shocked how badly Antonioni did. Only "Il grido" in the also-rans, "Le Amiche" and "La signora senza camelie" orphaned, and no votes for "Cronaca di un amore". Very surprising given that all these films are so easily available, but Italian cinema didn't do particularly well in general, it seems.

Also, it seems to be high time that Criterion finally releases Mizoguchi's "Oharu". Seeing it drop by 127 places into the also-rans is really cause for some consideration...

And yes, great work as always, swo!

swo17 wrote:Thanks again to everyone for your participation in this latest round of the lists project!

Pity I was too late to vote for this one; at least it should be interesting to compare with my intended selections

I love pre-'L'Avventura' Antonioni , especially "Il grido" and "Le Amiche", which would probably both make my 50's Top 50

A bit saddened, but not really surprised at the collapse of support/enthusiasm for classic Japanese cinema. The last time we did this, a lot of people had newly discovered many of these films, now they are "old news". ;~{

I'm particularly surprised at the high showing of ' The Night of the Hunter'!!

I'm not a great fan of:
Singin' in the Rain
The Band Wagon
Paths of Glory
Sansho the Bailiff
Anatomy of a Murder
Francesco, giullare di Dio
Man of the West
Ikiru
Los olvidados
All About Eve
La Ronde
The Human Condition
Forbidden Planet
Fires on the Plain (much prefer 'The Burmese Harp')
The Big Heat (much prefer 'Human Desire')
La strada
12 Angry Men
A Streetcar Named Desire
Dial M for Murder
The Bridge on the River Kwai

and I'm not sure these are strong enough contenders for my 50:
There's Always Tomorrow
Le Plaisir
The Magician
Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?
The Naked Spur
M. Hulot's Holiday

I actually rewatched Glen or Glenda? in the last week or two. It is fascinating, even-handed and quite beautiful in its way of non-patronisingly (although often amusingly!) describing the differences between transvestites and transexuals through two case studies. Its also surprisingly moving, with some of the off-kilter filmic moments just adding to the feeling of a very unorthodox educational film. I actually learned quite a lot from it!

Although I'm not sure I'd be daring enough (yet!) to put in on a 'top 50 from the 50s' list when the decade is so full of other, even higher, achievements in filmmaking.

Seconded all round, though I can't complain as I didn't vote. I kept meaning to do a big write-up on the '50s Antonionis - especially I Vinti, which seems to me the most extraordinary and daring of the bunch - but never quite found the time. I recently saw L'Amore in Citta for the first time, and was completely floored by it, but need to watch it at least a couple more times before I can say anything coherent about it.

Still, nice (if unsurprising) to see the whole Apu trilogy make it onto the list. Whenever I re-watch them, I always come away thinking they're the three best films ever made. Aparajito is my favourite at the moment, probably because its pathos is more restrained than that of the other two films, and Karuna Banerjee's performance is absolutely flawless.
