As far as I can tell, all this talk of 'weighted' lists and excluding the unworthy from voting is all predicated on certain people wanting to 'objectively' (according to certain procedures that they themselves will determine or vet) validate their own taste, and really, how sad is that?

The worth of an individual film has nothing to do with how it places on an informal consensus list of a handful of internet nerds, so relax, and defend your darlings when the time comes rather than splashing piss and bile over the people who happened not to agree with you. You'd think this was Punishment Park or something.

As someone who didn't get to see nearly as much as I would have liked to, I would be pretty happy to see this as well- it does nothing to lessen the movies that wind up on top, but it means the struggling contenders in the bottom ranks and the also-rans which only had two viewers might gain a little more cachet, and hopefully be more prominent in the next cycle's to-watch lists.
I was already planning to include some statistics along with the results that give an indication of which films placed highly on individual lists but just didn't get many votes. I'd be happy to tabulate something like Tommaso has suggested as well, though I'm not sure how many of the contributors will really want to sort through a list of 500+ titles and tick off which ones they have and haven't seen.
I don't think it's such a great idea to see every ingredient going into this sausage-- what's wrong with just listing the total points each film received and its subsequent ranking? The more compartmentalized the final list becomes, the less appeal it holds

And for the record, my answer to any future inquiry from a list tabulator as to whether I saw enough representatives from a certain list of perceived "important" films will be "Get fucked," followed by a request to remove my list from the tally.

Where did all the fun go? Chill out people, this list is basically just for fun and opening personal horizons. Don't take it so seriously.

I think that's kind of the point of the Sad Panda thread.

Here's my take on who should be allowed to participate in the project: The only list that really matters to me in the end is my own. The more people that participate in the project, the more recommendations I get. If certain people had not been permitted to participate (and how would you even determine who qualifies?) there are any number of films that I have recently discovered and loved that I would never have heard about. Some of these films will not ultimately make the top 100. Oh well. It doesn't diminish the films any, just means I've got to do more to get the word out.

There are going to be a lot of films that one or two people placed very highly but that won't have enough votes to rank in the top 100. I intend to lay out the results so that people who want to seek these films out can easily identify them.

Let me put an end to this:

Any List runner who tries to exclude other members from participating, who tries to exclude certain Lists from running, or who hijacks the List results in order to coerce members into accounting for their choices is immediately removed from their position and banned for two weeks. All Lists will be resubmitted and tabulated by someone else. No arguments.

Thankfully we do not have to worry about this kind of thing from the current people helping out.

No, it's about getting opinions from people who know their stuff. I find the choices in the BFI 360 list or in Rosenbaum's list very eccentric but the people who made them really have seen a lot and I respect that. I find it also interesting when a film I like is seen by many people and bombs badly (like Lubitsch's Mountain Cat). What I do not find interesting is a list that is essentially a slightly filtered edition of the usual run of the mill list due to the fact that the participant hasn't seen much more films. IMHO a bit of humility can't hurt before you submit a list which means that you should try to view a good percentage of the interesting films from the era. How else can one honor and judge the work of the men and women who worked on them?

As for the weighted poll I simply asked about the 70 (more or less) top films from the final ranking. Would have loved to ask about them all, but obviously this would be trying the patience of a few members. Simply thanks to family affairs I couldn't polish a list before tuesday, so please go right ahead.

Uh huh, and when people don't have enough humility for your tastes you'll force it on them by setting up some vanguard of elites who will vet other members and decide whether or not their opinions are good enough to be counted?

Unbelievable.

Well, how do you know that? Thanks to the swapsies and the freely available uploads that went with them I at least hope that some of the most important unavailable films have found some viewers that don't usually have access to them. What they make of these films is their choice. Of course it would have been great if everyone had had access to some treasure troves found elsewhere, or if a few more of the old stalwarts of the CritForum who seem to devote their energies in other places nowadays could have been reactivated for this listmaking (I think of Schrecko, David Hare, and Knappen especially), but if the final list contains at least some of those wonderful films ignored by dvd producers, TV stations, and film programmers these days, I'd say: mission accomplished. Even if no-one listens: after all we're still waiting for a dvd of "Nina Petrowna".

And of course my number one film will remain my number one, regardless of how the final list turns out. As you know: "Das gibt's nur einmal..."

One more point I'd like to make: None of the 30 lists that I've received so far are what I would call rote recitation of the canon. I think they all show a love and a great knowledge of film, even if some people focus more on certain areas than others. The issue that zedz was mentioning about the canon creeping in simply has to do with the quantity of contributors. (This is explained by the statistical concept of the law of large numbers.) If contributor A submits a list with 49 obscure Russian films and contributor B's list has 49 obscure Finnish films, but they both have, say, City Lights in common, then their sum contribution to the consensus list is just City Lights. Imagine that on a much larger scale and you have our 1930s list at the moment.

That being said, there are still many films new to the overall list as it currently stands, several of which I should think are rather obscure or remain commercially unavailable, which surely makes it all the more satisfying that they have penetrated through the canon as successfully as they have.

I'll be posting the results shortly in the next three posts. But first, I'd just like to sincerely thank everyone who participated in the project in any capacity. Aside from a few hiccups, it's been a blast, and I've personally found many new favorite films going through all of the great recommendations made here.

I've tried to present the results below with several (I think) useful statistics, but without leaving things looking too cluttered. To that end, here is a guide to what the figures listed after each film represent, each separated with a slash mark:

1. Total points (50 for each #1 placement, 49 for each #2, etc.)
2. Number of lists the film appeared on (out of 34 submitted). If the film appeared in anyone's top 10, the number of top 10 appearances is also denoted in parentheses.
3. Highest placement of the film on any one list. If more than one person ranked the film this high, this is also denoted in parentheses.
4. Change in position from the 2006 list, with movements of 10 or more highlighted

So for example, the 435/15(4)/1(x2)/+2 shown for Only Angels Have Wings means that it scored 435 points and appeared on 15 lists (and four top 10s), with two people ranking it as high as #1. The film also moved up two positions from its placement on the 2006 list.

For the list of orphans, only figure #3 is displayed.

The 1940s are up next--I'll start that thread in a couple of days. In the meantime, enjoy looking at lots and lots of numbers!

Graphic Results

Given the advent of sound cinema in the late '20s and early '30s, and the enforcement in the U.S. of the Hays Code beginning in 1934, I was curious to see how the results were distributed by year, both in the U.S. and otherwise:

I'm glad Au bonheur des dames made the list, but disappointed it ranked so low, I'd put it head and shoulders above Pepe le Moko. Also disappointed not a single Len Lye film made the list.

I'm shocked at how many Orphans I ended up with, especially given how many ballots were submitted. I guess I've finally fulfilled lubitsch's qualifications!!!!!

As has often been the case, the also-rans seem like a more interesting batch of films than the (not bad at all) top film list. Just goes to show how many really wonderful films there are out there.

Otsukaresama deshita (thank you -- connotation is you must be tired after working so hard for our benefit)

Computational note:

I count 16 also rans (including 2 of my top 5) and 12 orphans.

I wouldn't say it ranked that low. I think everything through the top half or so of the also-rans had a respectable showing. There are just clearly many more than 100 great films from the 1930s.

Also, Lye unsurprisingly was hurt by vote splitting. But he did at least sneak in to the top directors list.

Aww, two of my favorites got orphaned. Than again it looks like I have a lot to catch up on too.

I feel so guilty for not ranking The Good Fairy and Easy Living a few places higher. Poor Sturges. Thanks swo!

When something's number three on your list anything below top twenty on the final is low.

I'm not surprised by Lye, and I'm happy a good deal of voters included him.

I'm very happy to see that all three of my Leisen picks (Easy Living, Midnight, Hands Across the Table) evaded orphan status, if only just barely in the case of Hands (I love you, other voter!)

I forgot to vote for Hands Across the Table even though I'm a big supporter of that film, but even if I had it would still be in the bottom half of the Also Rans. I'm glad to see a couple other people included it.

I didn't vote for Ford's Air Mail just because I hadn't seen it recently enough, and it looks like no one else included it either. Is it even available anywhere?

Congrats to our Forum's answer to Euclid for a sterling piece off work and I'm glad my swathe of Renoirs didn't dilute the outcome too much. In fact I only scored 4 out of the top 20. I am also surprised that after all the smoochie talk for Duvivier I seem to be the only voter for La Tete d'un Homme.
