Thanks for putting this together, as always, Domino. I assume you and I are responsible for The Keeping Room placing? I hope it causes more people to seek that one out.

My top ten + orphans:

1. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
2. Once Upon a Time in the West
3. The Wild Bunch
4. Unforgiven
5. Man of the West
6. Treasure of the Sierra Madre
7. The Shooting
8. The Naked Spur
9. Ride the High Country
10. The Gunfighter

19. Junior Bonner: I'd guess a lot who like this movie wouldn't count it as a Western, and it is a border case. It's a magnificent film, on the more subtle and gentle end of Peckinpah, with some interesting montage-like editing choices. Takes the the western hero being left behind by progress and pushes it right into modernity, where there's no longer any grand fights, just those small, sad ones amongst a family that cannot cohere.

31. the Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada / 35. the Homesman: I'm not surprised; these are peculiar films that constantly risk outright failure with their mixture of tones and sometimes unpleasant visuals and subjects. I expect they work for only a small set of people, and looks like I'm the only one this round for whom they are perfectly suited for.

45. Valdez is Coming: childhood favourite I haven't seen in decades. Good for filling up the bottom of a list.

46. Bad Day at Black Rock: I don't actually remember why I liked this, but I did, so I stuck it here towards the bottom.

49. Run Man, Run: Overlong, silly, politically simplistic, lacking Lee Van Cleef, and still an unreasonable amount of fun with a rousing Morricone score and a tireless Tomas Milian. Far better than most non-Leone spaghettis.

I put Dances at Wolves at 3 on my list, which gives it 48 points. I presume it doesn't qualify to be tied at number 100 on points alone, but I'm astonished no one else included it.

Funnily enough, the longest debate I had in making the list was rather to put Unforgiven at number 2 or Dances with Wolves at number 2, as they were both functionally tied. I eventually went with Unforgiven simply for the expediency that I initially went with it at number 2 first. but I very nearly switched them.

My top ten

1 Searchers
2 unforgiven
3 dances with wolves
4 man who shot liberty valance
5 butch cassidy and the sundance kid
6 naked spur
7 Tombstone
8 the professionals
9 two rode together
10 blazing saddles

and orphans
18 maverick
One of my mothers favorite films, I must have watched it ten to twenty times in the 90s, funny, charming and just very entertaining. I haven't watched it in about five years, but I was astonished at how much I still enjoyed it. I think it is very underappreciated.

25 there will be blood
Perhaps no one else thought this was a western? Taming of the west themes to me equals its a western.

40 broken arrow
I haven't seen this in about ten years, but I remember quite liking this Jimmy Stewart, Delmer Daves western, known for its then novel respectful treatment of indians, iirc.

46 ride with the devil
Mitt Romney was ruthlessly mocked in 2012 for saying "the trees are right" in Michigan. but I know exactly what he meant. of the 4000+ films I've seen, I only know of two I've seen that filmed in the southern missouri ozarks or along the missouri/kansas border where I grew up. This film, and Winter's Bone. Since mileau is so important to westerns, this film makes the list, for me, because the Trees are right, one of the few westerns whose exteriors never feel subtly alien to me.

49 appaloosa
I remember seeing this with my dad when it was first released, I don't remember much about it, but I remember how fun it was seeing a western in the theatre with him.

50 northwest passage

Well, I owe it all to the only other person who added it to their list…

The real most improved player award here at the bottom of the list goes to River of No Return, which just barely missed out on making the list last time and just barely made it on this round. Kind of incredible considering the differing voters and ballots and shakeups!
Mr Sausage wrote:Thanks for putting this together, as always, Domino. I assume you and I are responsible for The Keeping Room placing? I hope it causes more people to seek that one out.
Yep! At least we both liked it strongly enough for it to place comfortably with only two passionate votes!

Okay, here’s my Top 10 + Orphans

01 the Last Wagon
While technically the Hateful Eight had the best debut on the list, for a film that could have received votes last time and garnered exactly zero, this wonderfully entertaining and superior western surely had the brightest ascent on the second edition of the list. I swapped this one in the top spot at the last minute, but it felt more right than Man of the West for me— here we have that film’s brutality and themes of the inability to escape one’s past, but also more in play on top of it, including a youthfulness absent from much of this genre's works and the pleasing forward momentum of Backlash and Stagecoach et al. At the end of the day, if someone claimed they hated westerns but was willing to take one last chance, this is what I’d suggest.
02 Stagecoach
03 Man of the West
04 the Gunfighter
05 Red River
06 Yellow Sky
07 Lonesome Dove
08 A Ticket to Tomahawk
09 Backlash
10 Calamity Jane

12 the Quick and the Dead (1994) Y’all keep missing the boat on this one
20 Arrowhead And this one
21 the Return of Frank James And now I suspect I’ll be the only one to list this on the upcoming Lang Auteur List
23 the Tall Texan
25 Gunman’s Walk
A strong reminder of the power of westerns to tackle psychological realism under the veneer of genre trappings
29 Little Big Horn
30 the Harvey Girls
33 Broken Lance
34 Der Schatz im Silbersee
I did actually end up voting for one Spaghetti Western in the 50 spot, Companeros, but this still tops by far anything else in this genre to come from another country
40 Jesse James
41 We Were Strangers
42 Hombre
43 Cold Mountain
48 Alvarez Kelly

Clues explained / Eszterhases comed again:
One more day to submit! Hint for results thus far: One of the films in the Top 5 last time is not even in the Top 50 so far
At the time this was in reference to Man of the West. Shortly after I posted this it was also true for Johnny Guitar. The huge downturn of Rio Bravo's popularity was not yet evident at this point in tabulating
Thirteen lists submitted so far. No film has appeared on every list. However, three have appeared on 12/13 lists-- and I wasn't the hold out on any of them! These three films were all helmed by different directors. Additionally, all three were released in three different sequential decades. Only one of the three films appeared in the Top 10 last time.
Okay, so this clue turned out to be bullshit by accident because I was counting votes for Yellow Sky twice at the time. The other two correct answers were Stagecoach and Winchester '73
A The current number one film is in black and white True -- Red River
B The same actor appears in the top three films True -- John Wayne in Red River, Stagecoach, and the Searchers
C No Anthony Mann films made the top ten False -- while Mann vacated the top spot rather unceremoniously, he was well-represented both in the top ten and overall
Final fun fact: For much of the list, the Naked Spur was number one!

Thanks for the hard work Domino!

I haven't seen The Last Wagon - so now I really want to see it because I like all the other Delmer Daves westerns I've seen. A lot of other films on this list to check out too.

I didn't consider or think of Treasure of the Sierra Madre as a western, or else it would have figured in my list - though not in the top ten.

My top ten:

1. The Searchers
2. Red River
3. Wagon Master
4. The Man from Laramie
5. My Darling Clementine
6. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
7. Winchester 73
8. Ride in the Whirlwind
9. Rio Bravo
10. Seven Men from Now

As one of the people who voted I can safely say it at least has the universal joy of an extremely sarcastic Richard Widmark if you get nothing else out of it.

I've only seen three westerns in my life, but if I knew The Harvey Girls was going to be orphaned I would have submitted a fake list to rectify that gross injustice.

FYI people looking to seek out the Last Wagon, it recently came out on Blu in Germany and buying it direct from Amazon.de is pretty cheap for US customers (get the 2016 Koch version, "Der letzte wagen"). I can vouch for the Blu, it looks good! And while you're there pick up the Blu of Gunman's Walk and see what an error you made in letting it get orphaned

This IMDb reviewer agrees:
terrible screenplay, contrite dialog, bad acting
Author: rightwingisevil from United States
1 April 2012

and annoying sound track. this western simply sucks big time. the dialog, my, is one of the worst. audie's small mouth still bothered me a lot, his acting still not quite up to the level as lot of the other greater western actors in that era. the screenplay also is just so pretentious that sometimes i just felt it might not know how to continue. the annoying sound track didn't matching the scenes, just moronically played on and on. don't even know why this movie got to be shot in spain. those locally recruited actors were just bad as those non-talented b-movie guys today. but the worst of the worst i think was still the sound track and audie's lousy acting. there's nothing great or even worth talking about. so actually, i'm wasting my time here.

Have you read/seen Comanche Moon? I don't wanna say too much if you haven't-but I loved the book, and feel the movie is pretty damn good too-with the exception to the lack of depth regarding Blue Duck that was so engrossing in the novel. In the book there's a real sense of tragedy that's missing from the movie. Steven Zahan, Val Kilmer, David Midthunder and Elizabeth Banks were unbelievably magnificent.

I haven't, but the cast looks good and same director, so I'm definitely interested now-- I think I saw how many long Lonesome Dove sequels there were and just gave up before even starting down that road!

Possibly! I'm not crazy about it but it's decent enough - the thing I feel validated about is seeing Rancho Notorious get so few votes and not make the list. I've never understood its status. On the other hand, not having seen Western Union and seeing it perform the best of Lang's westerns, I'm now definitely curious about seeing it.

Good to know about the Last Wagon blu. For fans of Man without a Star (though I'm the only one that voted for it!), I'm happy enough about the German blu.

I think Western Union is his weakest western, I don't get it, but maybe I'll give it a rewatch for the Lang list. I have the German Blu of Man Without a Star, but haven't watched it yet!

Thanks for doing the western redux domino! The one film I'll champion further is the 1916 W.S. Hart western Hell's Hinges. It's an excellent bit of Sodom and Gomorrah-style fey preacher corrupted by libidinous town silent film that turned up on the first Treasures From American Film Archives set and which (along with The Land Beyond The Sunset) was the highlight of that edition.

It has turned up on YouTube here :-$

this post reminded me that I forgot to vote for Fords silent "Three Bad Men" which I think is the best of his silent westerns. :/

I watched Hell's Hinges for the All Time List and sad to say it left no impression on me

Re: Ford. I'm the only one that voted for The Horse Soldiers and Drums Along the Mohawk (if this can be considered a western); Rio Grande, Sergeant Rutledge and Cheyenne Autumn were also-rans; and 3 Godfathers didn't get a vote. I'm surprised each of those films performed less well than Two Rode Together.
