My bad lubitsch--I somehow missed the PM. I hereby sentence myself to watching Intolerance three more times before I die.

I also volunteer to compile the 1930s or some future decade.

Quick note to the moderator who transfers this list to the masterlist forum: I had made a small mistake with The Avenging Conscience in the pre1920s list which I had corrected two days after publishing the list first, but it was already posted by Matt and a PM had no success. Please edit the post and move the film from shared 56th place to the 54th while places 54-56 drop a spot.

Thanks for the work, Lubitsch. The result is less surprising than I originally thought it would be and looks like good advice for anyone seeking out the era for the first time. A welcome surprise is that Lonesome made it to #5; a less welcome one is that Ruttmann's Berlin is only at #76  Oh, and please anyone explain to me what is so great or even only unusual about Ozu's Days of Youth, apart from being an Ozu film....

And in retrospect the PM'ing seems indeed to yield quite interesting results:
lubitsch wrote:In fact at the moment (awaiting a few PMs) there's only one film which got voted for by all who have seen it and that's the 32nd placed film which 7 have seen and 8 have not.
Somehow I knew this referred to my pet film of this period, Nina Petrowna. And the fact that everyone who saw it voted for it speaks volumes. This really belongs into the Top 10, guys, believe me.

It also means that I'll have to make even more promotion for my one pet film of the 1930s :D

Sorry Lubitsch if I seemed especially pissy(you are doing excellent on a thankless job). I just have a hard time understanding the emphasis on the results by the listmakers and so fins the PMs about cannon films or directors a tad odd.

Among many other things when you get down to it the stories being told are very samey. Hell by the time I reached Arsenal I nearly threw the VHS out the window I'd become so tired of this. There's just no variation and you have to choose between which pea you find the sturdiest. It's can not be a simple coincidence, for example, that all of my Soviet choices were the ones I watched early on or had no similarities to the soviet story.
That is true to a certain extent, but it is true for basically any other 'genre' I can think of, be it melodrama or the classical Hollywood musical. Or only think about Ozu films.... I think that here as with the Soviets the interest lies in the variations of the 'theme', and of course how much you're interested in or even only just like the 'theme'. I'll probably never muster a lot of interest in crime thrillers, so I'll certainly won't sit through ten of them in a row, even if they're all good. But I do like those Soviet films in general, and in my view there's a hell of a difference between "Arsenal", "Storm over Asia" or "The eleventh year". To each his own pleasure, then.
I actually was trying to buffer myself from this very rebuttal by taking into account the very different films that were made by the Soviets(and to give a distant example I do find something like Earth to be different enough as to be considered unrelated on a story level). I do find the comparison to crime thrillers a tad incorrect though with maybe the more specific '90s erotic crime thrillers would be more accurate as a point of comparison. Fatal Attraction and Basic Instinct may have been a fun way to start things, but even if the films had stayed at that quality within five years everyone would be tired on that story. this is especially true when the themes are more propagandist and lack the universal messages of an Ozu. Of course I believe this is only a small part of the reason; far from the only excuse and maybe not even a main one.

Edit: How did I not notice that Aelita didn't make the list. Now I really am a sad panda.

I'm also surprised at the low position of Berlin, but very glad to see that my darling Michael made it on there at a respectable 46.

As for the Eisenstein discussion on the previous page - well Battleship Potemkin was the third silent film I ever saw, and it opened the floodgates for my love of silents after I'd been bored to tears by Metropolis and Nosferatu (bear in mind I was about 15). I can understand some people not liking it and thinking it's overrated - a friend of mine was recently left cold by his first viewing, but then lapped up A Cottage on Dartmoor immediately afterwards - but I definitely wasn't responding to its critical reputation when I saw it, or when I saw Strike and October soon afterwards.

And as for the other discussion - I also find these decade lists a great exercise in self-improvement, and I've certainly been consulting past lists when trying to fill the gaps in my knowledge. Lubitsch's PMs not only provide interesting statistics, but might also remind people to vote for things they've forgotten (Steven H said he'd accidentally left out a couple of titles); I don't see the harm in it. There were an awful lot of gaps for me to fill on this project, and at times it did get a little wearying - so those were the times I stuck on Le Boucher or The Spy in Black. It's only an academic chore if you let it become one. Moreover, if this were not a place where film-watching is taken seriously, and where I can expect to be taken to task if I say something naïve or ill-informed (as happened to me when I first came here and made an unguarded comment about Sirk), I probably wouldn't stick around.

In short: we're lucky to have someone as well-informed, organised and opinionated as lubitsch here to oversee these lists and roundly disagree with us. I'm looking forward to the 1930s.

I was very surprised at my reaction to Berlin actually. I absolutely love the city symphonies I've seen so far, but that one fell flat(as did Opus) for some reason. I don't remember enough about it to say what it is that turned me off of the film, but there wasn't that explosive dynamic that I get from Vertov or Vigo's entries in the genre.

Nice list, quite different from the old one. Almost all the films I haven't seen (11) from this list are German... I'll have to check this Nina Petrowna.
I can't believe Show People barely made it at 99. It's my favorite Vidor film. Swap it with The Crowd.

I am also surprised at the low showing of Show People. It was in my top ten. :(

I also don't feel quite so bad about my participation, as I've seen 83 of the top 100 films, and would have gotten around to watching at least another 10 or so off that list, as I have them on DVD or in other form. Maldone was the only film from the list I really have never heard of, though I've heard Gremillon's name in passing. Now I'll be sure to check it out.

But on to the 1930's!

I don't know about fifteen entries in the top 100, I have taken good note.

Thanks Lubitsch, I think you did a good job. Next I'm going to run the Doubling the Canon project (btw, anyone interested is invited), which will keep me busy for some time. But you can count on me for the next poll, it's a pleasure to read and watch your recommendations.

I'm a bit curious about Dans La Nuit making this list. When I watched it, it was a bit of a fascinating disappointment. Certainly it's quite an interesting watch and explores some really cool themes and subject matter, but I found the overall execution fairly lacking. It seemed to just sort of project the emotions of each scene without really expressing them well through skillful storytelling. Perhaps my attention span was a bit lacking from watching so many movies back to back, but it seemed like the first 20 minutes lacked any story at all and was just kind of vague shots of being married and happy. Like you could understand that they were happy, but nothing ever happened to make you care about them. Throughout the movie it seemed like it was just showing the changes in the relationship without giving the characters any real life or depth.

Do I perhaps just owe this film a re-watch, or was the primary interest the subject matter, themes, and style?

It's a very nice list. Except that it needs a complete reshuffle of course :-) This will make me hunt down poor pixelated copies of a handful of films, thanks all especially for the individual listings.

What surprises me most (except for the bad performance of The Penalty) is the veneration for The Last Laugh, which I find completely unwatchable, but that is due to treatment of subject matter (i.e. of the protagonist). Anyway, since this thread has made me do a top ten, here it is.

Nosferatu
The Penalty
Chute de la Maison Usher
Sunrise
Phantom Carriage
Juve vs Fantomas
Cottage on Dartmoor
Histoire de détective
The Crowd
Hintertreppe

The idea behind this list is to calculate an average score by dividing the points a film got through the number of participants who have actually seen the film. Obviously some famous films drop down the list because everyone has seen them while films only seen by half ot the panel hint at their potential status. Obviously this doesn't mean that each film which has scored highle here would have reached the same result in the classical scoring had all people seen them, so always take this with a grain of salt. But then again it's unlikely that the non-viewers would have voted completely different. So just take the films which climbed in this score into strong consideration for your future viewing.

1. (1) La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc (Dreyer) 36,61 (659 points, 18 viewers, 16 votes)
2. (2) Sunrise (Murnau) 35, 17 (633 points, 18 viewers, 16 votes)
3. (20, +17) Finis terrae (Epstein) 29, 89 (269 points, 9 viewers, 7 votes)
4. (3, -1) The General (Keaton) 29,76 (506 points, 17 viewers, 13 votes)
5. (5) Lonesome (Fejös) 29,07 (436 points, 15 viewers, 13 votes)
6. (32, +26) Die wunderbare Lüge der Nina Petrowna (Schwarz) 26,50 (212 points, 8 viewers, 7 votes)
7. (4, -3) Der letzte Mann (Murnau) 24,78 (446 points, 18 viewers, 13 votes)
8. (6, -2) The Man with the Movie Camera (Vertov) 24,17 (435 points, 18 viewers, 14 votes)
9. (9) A Page of Madness (Kinugasa) 23,87 (358 points, 15 viewers, 13 votes)

Interesting, especially for the Top 30. Jumps of up to 46 places for individual titles paired with a maximum loss of 13 places in this upper third of the list seems to indicate that the well-known titles don't seem to suffer much from this alternative calculation, but that the less known/more-difficult-to-see ones sometimes benefit enormously. This is even more apparent if you only consider the Top 10: maximum gain 28 places, maximum loss 3 places. I didn't expect such a great difference between the two lists, to be honest.

Okay, just saw Nina Petrowna and you're right, it's great! It had made my list instead of, for example, Asphalt (the same year and country and a better screenplay and ending, but the mise-en-scène is not comparable).

Shouldn't this list be added to the masterlist thread?

Tom Gunning just declared it one of the great masterpieces of the silent period.

Bordwell/Thompson's best films of 1921 with a few mistakes in datings and DVD suggestions thrown in. Scherben is the most notable absentee from this list, Hintertreppe which placed third in our poll in 1921 is just a runner-up, no mentioning of the Grapevine DVD.

I am glad to find a couple of movies that failed to make our top 100: Johan and especially Miss Lulu Bett, an all-time favorite of mine. Unfortunately, I have not managed to see more films directed by the other DeMille.

I just discovered the odd Stark Love, one of the most unusual films I've ever seen. Amazing story combined with realistic filmmaking. Highly recommended, even if the only copy in circulation is quite poor (better than nothing, the film was considered lost for decades).

Another movie without a single mention that I would have voted today is Running Wild, W.C. Fields' funniest work of his career.
