It's been two days without a single film being added. Used to be they'd add something everyday. Nothing so far for today, Friday - their normal big drop day (or was it Thursday night after I'm off of the computer?).

Yeah, been a few days. Cancelled today. Might pick it up later if they add an incentive or two (like downloadable options, more diverse titles).

I have a couple more free weeks of access, but I'm at a turning point now where I'm at least thinking about paying for it at some point in the future. I guess Romy Schneider has that affect on me.

The Friday film drop on the Filmstruck side always happens at midnight GMT, or 8 p.m. Eastern, 7 Central. Same time that the departing films leave on Thursday.

I am VERY pleased and excited that Filmstruck is making Somai's Moving (Ohikkoshi) available. I have been shilling for this splendid film (with one of the best child performances ever) for around 15 years -- and yet it was not available with subs ("unofficial" ones apparently exist -- but I never saw this version). This is probably the closest thing there is too a live action Ghibli movie (about 60 percent Takahata, 40 Miyazaki blend) and a splendid examination of the impact of a divorce of parents (both of whom are decent people -- but no longer compatible) on a grade school age child. I hope everyone takes this opportunity (perhaps short-lived) too see Moving -- and cross my fingers hoping people won't find my praise for it wholly unfounded....

Now if only they can get the (much grimmer) Harmful Insect (Gaichu) by Shiota (also never available subbed -- even though the Japanese DVD was _supposed_ to have had subs)...

When The Lodger was initially added to the Criterion Channel, it was taken back down after only 3 days or so and unavailable until being re-upped yesterday. I asked a help desk rep about it a month ago, then emailed feedback@ about it...no response. They did send me a cheeky email yesterday letting me know it was back up, though.

That film was never on FilmStruck, but either way, you can see what's up for streaming without even needing an account by going to https://watch.filmstruck.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I highly recommend Nomura's Stakeout -- which (meteorologically) makes Stray Dog look like an alpine vacation. (Possibly Nomura's best film -- even better than Zero Focus).

Needless to say, the Naruse films are all wonderful. ;-)

CriterionCast put up the July breakdown last week.

Most interesting is probably Grand Illusion and Young and Innocent. The former is surely just a temporary license for streaming but exciting to see it again nonetheless.

So far, I have not been very impressed with Filmstruck. I have been using it for about 2 weeks now through our Roku. The streaming quality is not very good (watching it on our 55" Plasma TV) most of the time, and it is difficult to find stuff. You can't do a search by director or year. You also can't search by Criterion release number in the Criterion Collection section. I'm not sure how good the app is on the AppleTV, but the app on the Roku just seems very buggy. I realize that Filmstruck is a new venture, and Netflix had it's issues when it first started too. But it seems like Filmstruck is starting from a vantage point where streaming is a new concept or technology or something. We are new to all this streaming stuff (we got our first Roku about 6 months ago), so maybe we have unrealistic expectations. However, both of our Netflix and HBOGO apps work great and we have never experienced problems navigating through their apps or with their picture quality. When we signed up for Filmstruck, I was under the impression that I may never have to buy another Criterion release on Bluray again... but it seems like this will not be the case. The picture quality of a Criterion Bluray disc looks better than any streaming Criterion movie we have seen so far. Oh well...
