Premiering on the Criterion Channel this month (as in August--so now two updates a month?):

August 18
All My Good Countrymen, Vojtech Jasny, 1969
Palermo Shooting, Wim Wenders, 2008
The Passionate Friends, David Lean, 1949
The Masseurs and a Woman, Hiroshi Shimizu, 1938

August 22
Teeth, Daniel Gray and Tom Brown, 2015

August 25
Maîtresse, Barbet Schroeder, 1975
The Neighbor's Wife and Mine, Heinosuke Gosho, 1931
Rusty Knife, Toshio Masuda, 1958

August 30
Marius, Alexander Korda, 1931
Fanny, Marc Allégret, 1932
César, Marcel Pagnol, 1936

Also really relevant: How to Get Ahead in Advertising is the feature for August 22, so i assume that means they have the rights to that back (don't ask me why they don't list it otherwise).

Kitty Foyle would be a great unexpected Warner's acquisition, though it doesn't seem too in line with Criterion's other snatches. Maybe they want a release to put out Ginger Rogers extras?

These are the Filmstruck additions, not Criterion additions (and, anyway, considering there's no other Warners titles streaming as part of the Criterion Channel, would bear absolutely no bearing on any release).

So now that Apple via iTunes and the new Apple TV is going 4K, is there any chance Criterion will start supporting it in either iTunes or Filmstruck - and if so where would they try first?

The Godard selection this past week, for example - not exactly deep cuts, obviously, but it's *amazing* to just have this condensed greatest hits selection added for six months so anyone can do their own little intro to Godard.
It's because the platform rollout has been far slower than originally promised, if it's even got any more steam at all. I can't believe that they still can't deliver the service on a game console - there is all sorts of crazy shit on Xbox One in particular - amateurs can even submit their own streaming app platforms if they have the blessing of the service that they're aggregating content from.

For what it's worth I really really love Filmstruck, probably because I watch it usually by projecting from my laptop.

The thing about Filmstruck for me is that, while the selection and extras are great on both the Criterion and non-Criterion side, I still miss the old Hulu partnership because I didn't have to worry about device compatibility and weird netcode/bugs as much. Obviously this isn't the case for everyone and it does seem like people are getting a lot out of their Filmstruck memberships and that's great but one of the frustrating things about the state of streaming for me is how fragmented everything is. Even with outside websites and manually compiled lists, it's really difficult to keep track of what movies are being added and expiring from so many streaming services and it seems like every studio and rights holder wants to branch out into its own streaming platform these days. Even all the add-on services Amazon offers are overwhelming but for me that's a step in the right direction. I liked being able to add a Showtime subscription to my Hulu account instead of being forced to use Showtime's streaming service and praying there's a PS4 app.

The very early marketing efforts made Filmstruck sound like an equal partnership between Criterion and Turner Classic Movies. It did not pan out that way. It's great that Criterion has put so much effort into it and loaded it with great foreign and arthouse films, but if there was an equal amount of classic Hollywood films, it would be incredible.

But part of my point is that, while the Criterion selection is great as it was on Hulu, the non-Criterion part has also been great! It's not *quite* the TCM studio era classics (has there ever been a month they don't show Ghost and Mrs. Muir?) but that's, by far, the thing that excites me most about the lineup.

Really? My memory is that they were very clear from the beginning that this *wouldn't* be classic Hollywood. That the TCM side of things was doing exactly what the non-Criterion part of Filmstruck is doing now.

I'm loving it so far. I do wish TCM would develop a similar app for the channel (or maybe a streaming app for Amazon not unlike the ones they have for HBO et al.), I think they would find it would be more of a successful venture than they may think.
