It is fantastic, but there is a new restoration of Ordet premiering at Berlin so I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a Criterion upgrade in the near futureDrucker wrote:The BFI set is perfect!

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
I've been hoping for an Anthony Mann/Jimmy Stewart western box set for years... The Criterion lurkers here have heard my prayers on the Dietrich/von Sternberg box, the Bergman/Rossellini, and To Sleep With Anger..Glowingwabbit wrote: ↑Sun Jan 20, 2019 12:45 pmI agree. I would happily add it to my collection during a KL sale given their prices, but I'm not sure about a criterion edition. Winchester 73 on the other hand is something I'd love for Criterion to dodomino harvey wrote: ↑Sun Jan 20, 2019 12:29 pmDestry Rides Again is an okay movie, but it would be a strange pick for a Criterion release. Perhaps someone at the label is a fan

I would love that too but that's definitely not gonna happen as those titles have been split up and some already have been released/announced.

Is there still a chance for The Trip movies/series?

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
Probably not. Criterion hasn't really shown any interest in The Trip series on social media and the individual films have all been released by other companies.
From IFC's recent releases I think most are expecting Let the Sunshine In, Wildlife and Death of Stalin. The film Blaze (Ethan Hawke) is also mysteriously absent from dvd/blu.

To what end? The last Blu-Ray release is pretty definitive. And what we really need is Lost Highway anyway.

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
I imagine if they could get some interviews in there alongside the previous Blu-Ray's materials I would probably buy it. Granted I too would much prefer Lost Highway too but Blue Velvet has pedigree. I'm sure Laura Dern and Kyle McLaughlin aren't too busy. I only wish Hopper was still around to recap his performance.soundchaser wrote: ↑Fri Feb 01, 2019 8:31 pmTo what end? For Blue Velvet, I imagine that Criterion will try to include Peter Braatz's No Frank in Lumberton and/or Blue Velvet Revisited (assuming these are any good.)

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
The previous Blu-Ray of Blue Velvet wasn't a 4k scan, or was it (I don't own it)? Got to agree though, Lost Highway is in more urgent need of a new scan and release (what with some of that pitch black cinematography in the first half) as well as contextual material, and I say that as someone who doesn't even like that film all that much.

Remember they also just did a "completely unnecessary" Fire Walk with Me

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
The current Blu-ray of Blue Velvet uses a very old master, the same one that appeared on DVD many years before the Blu. Which is why the new deleted scenes look much better than the main event.
So I'd say Criterion have every reason to do Blue Velvet, as much reason as they had to do Silence of the Lambs recently or The Player.
Fire Walk With Me was largely pointless because it used the nice new transfer that appeared only a few years before.

Criterion forgot to do a newsletter / clue for January!
Maybe there not being a clue is a clue for something.....
No, don't go speculating on that.

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
Not even a 2k scan for Blue Velvet? That changes things of course. Criterion could also add a Julee Cruise interview as the film started her career on top of a new scan and the existing content. And if they want to complete the Lynch canon as much as licences allow them to, they could also get The Straight Story (4k scan, new interview with Sissy Spacek, perhaps reminiscences on Farnsworth and Stanton) as well as Lost Highway.

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
I was under the impression that Cruise was upset with Lynch for some reason. I also imagine Lynch will include the Siskel and Ebert review where Ebert gets in quite a huff over it.

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
All I know is the transfer dates back to at least the 2006 20th anniversary release. It was out of date when the first Blu-ray showed up.
Same goes for Wild at Heart, which uses the same old DVD master across all of its various Blu-ray editions.

There was a new DCP of Blue Velvet in 2016 that was from a new 4K scan.

I assume there must be some deal with Netflix then. As The Other Side of the Wind has been heavily hinted at as well.
If there were a Netflix deal, are there any other obvious picks?
