1225 Black God, White Devil

Black God, White Devil

Image

Myth, mysticism, and revolution collide in a blistering existential western from Glauber Rocha, the father of Brazil's socially committed Cinema Novo movement. After killing his swindling boss, ranch hand Manoel (Geraldo Del Rey) goes on the run with his wife, Rosa (Yoná Magalhães). In the stark hinterlands, they join forces with armed bandits and pledge allegiance to a self-styled holy man who preaches revolt against rich landowners while perpetrating unspeakable acts of violence against the innocent. Suffused with antiauthoritarian fervor and the intensity of life in the desert, this landmark work of radical cinema is a scorched-earth allegory about mindless fanaticism and the allure of dead-end ideologies.

So this one being left out of the UHD orgy must have something to do with the quality of the 4k restoration, rather than its perceived importance? There were some talks about the DNR applied but I have not open my Mawu to see how bad it is yet. Would be interesting to listen to the restorer’s commentary track on this issue, though.

note that the Mawu edition (which also features the poster cover as a reversible sleeve) is region free and available now, no reason to wait on the Criterion. especially since it has all the extras minus
Memória do cangaço (1964), a short documentary on the origins of cangaço, a form of social banditry in northeastern Brazil
and the Pena interview. has it's own scholarly piece though, though I admit I've yet to watch

The Mawu will almost certainly also be better encoded for those who care, being done by Fidelity in Motion. There's over 5 hours of content, which sounds like a lot for Criterion to cram on a single blu-ray (as I'm working my way through the pretty rough looking Chantal Akerman set).

Interesting, I thought people mentioned that Mawu had questionable encoding in the past, so I was waiting for the Criterion. Is this untrue, or an exception?

They probably won't match Fidelity in Motion, but the listing says it's a two-disc release.

The product page lists it as a two blu-ray set.

Wow, thanks for the clarification. Really surprised Criterion went with two discs, seeing how much they've been cramming on discs in the recent past.

Does anyone know how the French Blu-Ray by Capricci compares against the Mawu release?

Picture quality wise? The Capricci release does have a couple exclusive interviews, as far as I know, however it doesn't have English subtitles.

I'll get this eventually but FWIW the restoration did look great on DCP. It's had a few bookings here in NY and I think Metrograph may be showing it next.

EDIT: Actually in a few hours!
