I'll be slightly more negative than the above and say while this hints at the talent Cuaron would become (I'm actually surprised it came so late in his career as this seems like a logical followup to Only with Your Partner) this just doesn't work, for me. The American Pie stuff is really grating and the very surface level look at Mexican politics while refreshingly non-preachy doesn't really ever seem to inform us on the characters in the window dressing way the film seems to be aiming for. It was cool to see everyone so young though.

I haven't seen this mentioned here, but for those who are interested: This title was re-issued this month as a single-blu-ray disc – but digipak! – edition. It still comes with the thick 72-page booklet.
